@ai6yr The article links to another with this headline "L.A. driver goes on high-speed rampage amid violent downtown protests".

The guy attempts mass murder with a car as a weapon, but it's the protestors who are "violent".

US media is complicit in where we are. #USpol #CarCentrism #Fascism

I asked my friend why they'd design things this way, and they guessed that it was to save money by only having to build a sidewalk on one side. #Abbotsford #CarCentrism

Cyclists are pretty familiar with cycle paths or lanes that deadend. But car-centrism also includes sidewalks that disappear.

I walked about 2 miles and in that time I had to cross back and forth across the street several times because sidewalk was only on one side of the street and it was somewhat random which side would have it

There usually were not crosswalks where wheelchair users/peds were forced to cross and this in a neighborhood where many have gigantic trucks #CarCentrism #Abbotsford

View looking from the street to a corner with a pedestrian eye view. The sidewalk only covers half the corner because one side gets a sidewalk and other part doesn't. It's lawn with a curb.

"the Assembly Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee voted to advance the measure. The 13 members of the committee, including Rogers, weren’t persuaded by the objections from a Native American tribe, environmentalists and transportation advocacy groups that oppose widening highways. They argue that research shows that adding lanes doesn’t reduce congestion.

Only one committee member, Gregg Hart, a Democrat from Santa Barbara, declined to vote"

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Gladly I do #WorkFromHome >99% of the time so I'm not required to #commute and there's good, affordable #PublicTransport in #Germany (at least in the urban area I live in)...

  • That doesn't mean #CarCentrism is good - it's evidently shit and every car on the road is a failure of public transport!

@meganL yikes. We're experiencing a reversal on infrastructure here in #Boston, too. The Mayor seems to be mulling a cynical campaign pivot to meet her opponent's anti-bike bids to the #CarCentrism chuds. Lots of existing improvements under threat pending a "review" (poll, I'm sure) period

we had a lovely e-trike (Lectric) riding with #CriticalMass #Boston last week in some protest action to compliment some lobbying action to encourage the Mayor not to make a cynical campaign pivot to #CarCentrism to compete with her anti-bike opponent.

It was a pleasure to have #Trike representation in our mass. It left me thinking about how wonderful it is that we can move in different ways, but share the joy of riding, and stand as political allies. And about how that kind of solidarity isn't specific to bikes in a life well lived.

'Oh the person in front of me was doing under the speed limit so I got frustrated and then <insert a self-absolving description for driving recklessly>!'

If you lack the emotional regulation to drive safely under the mildest adversity, you're not a 'good driver who occasionally gets frustrated', you're a bad driver who frequently gets lucky.

I would go so far as to say 'shouldn't be driving at all', but I recognise a lot of places are impossible to live without a car.

@FluentInFinance Yes because that's very much the norm in #Europe!

  • Most #City-Centers espechally in #Germany have #MidRise buildings here with basically the follwing Levels (top to bottom)...

Penthouse / Roof Garden
1-5+ levels full with Apartments
1-5+ levels with Offices (i.e. doctors, lawyers, architects, engineers, HR firms, ...)
1-5+ levels Commercial Space (i.e. stores, restaurants, bars,)

1-3 levels Underground parking garage
1-2 levels Cellar for Storage

  • Oftentimes Apartments and Offices are gradually intermixed, as "white collar business" tennants and housing units can be built identically and anything inside is just drywall, plumbing and wiring...

Also we don't have #ParkingSpaceMandates here so there are more efficient land useages here...

Just saw a delivery van just driving around with a fully flat tyre (front left). They surely must feel it and they certainly must hear it.

Not sure if they're too oblivious to notice, just don't care, or are too pressed for time to stop, so instead are royally fucking up their car and the road.

Either way, these are the people we allow on our roads. Neither of the 3 is a good option for driving a multi tonne killing machine.

Got stuck at a red light in an intersection in the centre of #Crawley today. It seems that the light only goes green when the "system" thinks there's somebody waiting and that somebody has to obviously be in a motor vehicle, despite there being an advanced stop line for cyclists. Watched the lights go through two full cycles until a driver pulled up behind me. *Then* the light changed. Hey hum. And people complain about cyclists running red lights.

The article doesn't specify what the "material moving cart" UCSF uses is...whether it's an electric golf cart or a metal cart on caster wheels. However, on the UC Davis campus, UC Davis employees using both combustion engine John Deere carts and electric golf carts routinely exceed the 15 mph limit on internal campus cycle paths.

Systemic ableism is:

- UC Davis job ads with "must be able to lift 50 lbs" to screen out disabled people from the git-go.

- Very limited disabled auto parking, even more limited accessible paratransit, which is often not close.

but

- UC Davis abled driving employees parking their air conditioned trucks/vans in the middle of ped/wheelchair paths, blocking ramps coz they "have to carry things" and don't like the couple minutes it takes the AC to cool things.

There are parking lots just beyond that shrub as well as a large lot behind the camera.

Disabled people at UC are heavily policed. Abled convenience lovers? Not so much.

Fork in a concrete path at the UC Davis Arboretum.

The triangular bed in the fork has a Chilopsis shrub casting shade. A UC Davis Facilities Maintenance truck with CA exempt license 1211678 is parked blocking most of what would have been an adequately accesssible width.

There is no loading going on and no heavy equipment in the truck bed. No evidence of any loading for at least 20 min it was witnessed. It is clearly parked where it is in order to be shaded, with no regard to egress of mobility aid users, shortening the useful life of the concrete path, and the effect of auto runoff on the Arboretum wildlife and botanical accessions.
