Heat pumps are amazing; fugitive emissions from refrigerant gases not so much. Making them with magnets & special metals instead is possible, but hasn't been practical so far. Interesting, but reasoning here: "We assumed, if a device weighs about the same, the cost will be about the same in mass production." seems a bit of a leap, and the embedded emissions aspect for those different materials is similar, I would assume.
