⚠️ Breakthrough & trade-off: ESA’s Biomass satellite to revolutionize global forest carbon measurement 🌍🔋

🎯 P-band radar penetrates canopies to directly ‘weigh’ trunks and large branches
🚫 Power down zones over North America & Europe—must avoid jamming reconnaissance satellites
⏳ Five-year mission covering remote, data-poor forests like the Amazon
📊 Actionable insights for policymakers on carbon stocks, deforestation, and climate resilience

Balancing cutting-edge science with geopolitical constraints—how should we harness this data to drive real change?

🌍 I'll be speaking at the Climate Obstruction in Finance WG on April 24 at 4 pm GMT (11 am EST / 5 pm CET). I'll discuss how financial firms perform accountability for their carbon emissions without truly addressing them. Join us to explore who gets called to account for carbon emissions in finance.

🌍 Talk Alert: "How a Financial Firm Eschews Accountability for Their Carbon Emissions" 🌍

On April 24, I’ll share insights from my ethnographic study of a major financial firm and its carbon accounting practices. Despite claiming sustainability, the firm’s systems obscure real responsibility. Through technical infrastructures, socio-technical practices, and social negotiations, accountability becomes a performance, hiding the complexity beneath the data.

Join me as we unpack how “optimised” systems can evade real accountability, and reflect on the future of social science in environmental governance.

🕓 When: April 24, 4 pm GMT (11 am EST / 5 pm CET)

Heat pumps are amazing; fugitive emissions from refrigerant gases not so much. Making them with magnets & special metals instead is possible, but hasn't been practical so far. This may be changing. ameslab.gov/news/the-future-of

Interesting, but reasoning here: "We assumed, if a device weighs about the same, the cost will be about the same in mass production." seems a bit of a leap, and the embedded emissions aspect for those different materials is similar, I would assume.

Company I work for has significant new product release. They are promoting it on LinkedIn which is, to be fair, where the potential customers for such a product are much more likely to see it, but in case anyone here happens to be interested in carbon accounting service for their supply chain ... opteraclimate.com/next-gen-sup

Research: Australian human-induced native forest regeneration carbon offset projects have limited impact on changes in woody vegetation cover and carbon removals.

Poor integrity carbon offsets actually enables fossil fuel projects to increase emissions under current #SafeguardMechanism policy settings which allows unlimited offset credits to meet set targets.

We're launching a comprehensive carbon footprint audit at work! We're seeking recommendations and feedback for consulting firms that offer in-depth audits and develop action plans to improve our sustainability.
Open source options will be considered first. ;)

And I think that probably, petrol companies are going the first to signal this, because they are the ones that have it more difficult, but I bet an arm that the rest are going to do the same.

Shell abandons 2035 emissions target and weakens 2030 goal carbonbrief.org/shell-abandons

I had little doubts that something like this was going to happen. As we approach the target years, companies are going to shy away from their carbon reduction targets and they are going to kick the can down the road —again.

Interesting analysis of ocean traffic! theverge.com/2024/1/3/24018797. Not covered in The Verge's piece but mentioned in the published papers conclusion section: "Our data can also help to quantify the scale of greenhouse gas emissions from vessel traffic and offshore development,"

That sound you hear is of corporations HUSTLING to put in place their and departments.

The SEC is not far behind California.
I look forward to seeing those rankings. A "carbon fact" on product labels would be nice, like "nutrition facts" on food labels.

It's "The new dawn of a corporate climate disclosure regime with legal teeth."
