"In a first investment of its kind in Australia, the Castlemaine Community Investment Co-operative has now officially purchased the historic Hub building on the corner of Barker and Templeton Streets, Castlemaine. The Co-operative is a group of residents working together to purchase and manage local properties, taking them out of the speculative real estate market to make them community-owned for good."

Gestärkt zurück zum Bahnhof, die Port Philipp Radlergruppe treffen. Da ist nur Liz, die in #Castlemaine wohnt. Gut, zwei ist eine Menschenmenge, also los nach #Guildford . Ein wenig quasseln, soweit der Verkehr auf der Landstraße es zulässt. In Guildford ist ein 500-1000 jähriger Baum zu bestaunen. Außerdem wurde der hier aufgewachsenen Footy-Legende Ron Barassi ein Denkmal gesetzt, an dem Melbourne- und Carltonschals hängen.. Nach einem Kaffee ging es zurück nach Castlemaine.

Ein knorriger River Red Gum Tree, weiße Rinde, schütteres Laubkleid in grün. Eukalypten sind immergrün. Unten steht Liz, vor dem Riesenbaum wirkt sie klein. Im Hintergrund der Winterhimmel blau und weiße Wolken.

Gestern mit der Bahn von #Melbourne nach #Castlemaine . Ca. 1,5 Stunden, davon die erste Hälfte in den Suburbs der Großstadt. Stop in Watergardens. Ich sehe eine Halle der Zeugen Jehovas, eine Moschee und eine Kirche. Ein vietnamesischs Ladenschild. Hier ist wohl für jeden etwas.

In Castlemaine gefrühstückt, im Kaffeehaus. Kaffee türkisch und dazu Fiaker-Gulasch. Frage einen Mann, ob er der Boss sei. "Nein", sagt der Österreicher, "das ist die gnädige Frau dort."

Spiegelei, Würstchen, Brötchen, Butterschale, Senfgurke. Türkischer Kaffee auf goldenem Teller serviert, mit Metalltöpfchen, in dem der gesüßte Kaffee auf dem Feuer zubereitet wurde, ein kleines dekoriertes Tässchen und Untertasse, kleines Wasserglas und Türkisch Delight, ich habe vergessen, wie die Süßigkeit auf deutsch heißt... Im Hintergrund eine Familie am Nachbartisch.

River red gum ride, rescheduled to Saturday 14th June. Ride from Castlemaine railway station to the town of Guildford, 10km West of Castlemaine. Guildford's Big Tree Park is home to a gigantic River Red Gum 500 to 1,000 years old! Due to its great age, numerous hollows have formed within the tree providing habitat for many creatures. This tree is an eco-system which sustains a vast range of bird and animal life including magpies, rosellas, lorikeets, parrots, kookaburras, wood ducks, boobook owls, honey eaters, numerous species of insects, native bees and possums. Also, in Guildford see the statue of local hero Ron Barassi and many old gold rush buildings. We will cycle along the Midland highway, which has a wide shoulder and not much traffic, and along quiet backroads. Return to Castlemaine via the same route for lunch. Meet 10:30am Castlemaine railway station.

Last night our Co-op launched its capital raise to buy The Hub Castlemaine for the community! Pretty chuffed with the turnout we got.

Now to see if we can raise the money... Our goal is to buy it for the community and take it out of the speculative property market for good. Members can buy debentures that are like a loan, paying interest each year and then paid back in full at the end.

The non-profit Co-op will own the building, so there's no "shareholders" to cash out in the future for a big profit and quick pay day.
