When You Stop Trusting What You See

I spent years blaming my technique when my photos lost sharpness — it turned out my eyes had quietly changed in ways I never noticed.

When people or businesses treat you right, I feel like they should get credit. If you don’t want to hear about some business I like, stop reading this post now.

Probably this is more interesting when I talk about software tools than businesses, but it’s the same compulsion.

I just had #CataractSurgery. That means new #Glasses. I ordered specialized sports glasses from a place called TacticalRX. It’s a veteran-owned, family-run business that grinds their own lenses. That means they can do things no one else will do: when they make multi-focal lenses, they can flip the top and bottom prescriptions or **not** use your reader strength as the close-up number. Oh, and yeah, I need prescription lenses; but these guys make non-correcting glasses as well.

My new vision is three zones now: close up requires correction; computer screen distance is perfect; distance requires correction. So in my car, I don’t need correction to see the console, and I don’t need to see my watch or my phone at all. Distance correction on top and no correction at all on the bottom would work perfectly for this scenario (and a smaller than usual bottom zone, plus bifocals-with-a-line to preserve peripheral vision instead of progressives). These guys can do it. No one else will even try. They specialize in glasses for various sports and professions, e.g., EMTs was one of the examples. (They show a lot of shooting glasses up front on the website — I think because shooters always have to have glasses maybe; but whatever sport, profession, or scenario you care about, they can do.)

On top of their technical capabilities, they just plain treated me like I mattered. These are good people who **want** me to end up satisfied. They didn’t ask me to spread the word. I’m doing it because they deserve it.

They’re in Denver, CO. I’ve been on the phone with them many times and have usually spoken to either Alex or James. I can’t remember about James; but Alex for sure owns a dog.

I am not getting used to holding my phone further away to see it. And often, the puppy on my lap is in the way of that! #CataractSurgery

#CataractSurgery now complete on both eyes.

Good news: I probably don’t need readers. Just holding the phone a little further away and using the accessibility settings to increase the font size is probably enough.

Bad news: my old "everything glasses" don’t work at all for distance. I was anticipating that they would, and so I could drive safely. I can’t get new glasses until my vision "settles".

Once I have distance, this will be the best vision I’ve ever had in my entire life. But at the moment, ugh.

On Thursday, Dr. Lev Prasov of the #KelloggEyeCenter in Ann Arbor performed #CataractSurgery on my left (non-dominant) eye. He’ll do my right eye at the beginning of December. My natural vision is super near-sighted. My new vision will be, to the extent we could do so, geared toward using my computer. I’ll need glasses for reading (which will also cover my phone and watch). I’ll need general purpose glasses, which will include distance for driving. I’ll probably need separate sunglasses. Depending on how we do, I might need something for the computer, too.

I can already see in new ways and it’s pretty awesome.

I did my research. Dr. Prasov is absolutely what I wanted in a surgeon. If you need this and if Kellogg is a choice for you, I’m happy to personally describe my experiences so you can decide if any of my thoughts can be helpful to you.

OP done. It was trippy … and real quick.

A close-up, black-and-white photo of a person with a shaved head wearing dark sunglasses. Their right eye is covered with a medical bandage secured by surgical tape. The person has a pencil beard and a soul patch and is wearing over-ear headphones around their neck. They appear to be dressed warmly in a thick, fur-lined jacket. The background is out of focus but hints at an indoor setting, possibly with artwork or a decorative element behind them.

Post #CataractSurgery update:

My partner's been meandering through the house all week, alternately opening and closing each eye. She'll stop in front of me, point at the "bad" eye, and say "I need to get this one done too. I should've scheduled to get this one done too." I'm concerned.

All of the fear and apprehension are gone now. If she had five or ten eyeballs, she'd be signed up to get each one of them lasered. She's hooked.

Don't let this happen to you, kids. Once you start getting lasers shot into your eyeballs....

Off to the eyeballologist for my partner's date with a laser and a temporary eye patch.

I'm hoping she has the good humor to talk to me like a pirate for the rest of the time she is in recovery.

Exciting news! My cataract surgery is scheduled for the end of August. It’s the earliest appointment available, and while I’m not a fan of waiting, I’m ready to get this done and start seeing clearly again! 👀✨ #CataractSurgery

#CataractSurgery is on joke. You can die on the table. I nearly did.

I had my cataract surgeries done at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. When I went for my second surgery they gave me too much fentanyl and I became "unresponsive". I don't know whose mistake it was, either the anesthetist or the factory that dosed it out. Either way, the surgeon called my partner and told her. She thought I was dying and totally freaked out.

They gave me to puffs or Narcan with no results so they wheeled me to the recovery room so I'd die on somebody else's watch. A nurse in the recovery room gave me a third puff and a came out of it bleary but alive. My partner showed up and took me home. She was seriously shook up by the incident. She was mad, too. She really, really, really, wanted to sue. It was a clear cut case of malpractice but, as our lawyer explained, we couldn't get any monetary recompense "because there was no permanent damage".

Two weeks later I went back to to get the second cataract removed. I refused fentanyl. They refused to give me Propofol instead, so I went through the operation with only local anesthesia. I was totally conscious. It was like staring at a giant Klieg light up close, not pleasant at all, but I had to do it in order to see, so I did.

Having one good eye, and one recovering eye makes life interesting, and occasionally a little difficult, but I'm making it work.
As a long term (55 years) spectacle wearer, I have to say it adds a level of complication, I'd anticipated it, but it's still not easy.

It's a small miracle. He hasn't seen this well in 50 years.
It's not what we expected at all. He thought he wouldn't be able to see properly without rigid gas permeable lenses being fitted in about 4 weeks. If you know the condition #keratoconus then you'll understand why it's been so bad.
This surgeon has performed a small miracle and I could tell by the little smile on his face that he was really pleased with his work.
In 4 weeks they'll reassess, but he's actually driving bare eyed for the first time since he was 18! (Such a relief that I won't have to drive everywhere.)

ERM formation

Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation can occur years after cataract surgery due to changes in the vitreoretinal interface. Blue light reflectance imaging enhances the visibility of ERM, highlighting subtle structural details and providing clear visualization of its extent. This imaging modality is valuable for monitoring ERM progression and planning potential surgical intervention.
