A quotation from Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Categorizing is necessary for humans, but it becomes pathological when the category is seen as definitive, preventing people from considering the fuzziness of boundaries, let alone revising their categories.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist
The Black Swan, Part 1, ch. 1 “The Apprenticeship of an Empirical Skeptic” (2007)

PHYSIOGNOMY, n. The art of determining the character of another by the resemblances and differences between his face and our own, which is the standard of excellence.

A quotation from Robert Benchley

There may be said to be two classes of people in the world: those who constantly divide the people of the world into two classes, and those who do not.

Robert Benchley (1889-1945) American humorist, columnist, actor, wit
Of All Things, ch. 20 “The Most Popular Book of the Month” (1921)

A quotation from Nicholas Taleb

We humans, facing limits of knowledge, and things we do not observe, the unseen and the unknown, resolve the tension by squeezing life and the world into crisp commoditized ideas, reductive categories, specific vocabularies, and prepackaged narratives, which, on the occasion, has explosive consequences.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist.
The Bed of Procrustes: Philosophical and Practical Aphorisms, Introduction (2010)

A quotation from Nassim Taleb

Because our minds need to reduce information, we are more likely to try to squeeze a phenomenon into the Procrustean bed of a crisp and known category (amputating the unknown), rather than suspend categorization, and make it tangible. Thanks to our detections of false patterns, along with real ones, what is random will appear less random and more certain — our overactive brains are more likely to impose the wrong, simplistic, narrative than no narrative at all.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist.
The Bed of Procrustes: Philosophical and Practical Aphorisms, “Postface” (2010)

The "is a hotdog a sandwich" question is fascinating to me, not because it doesn't have an obvious answer (it does: "fuck no, why would you ask such a stupid question"), but because once you ask folks to justify why or why not, they start producing these bizarre taxonomies based on the features of a sandwich, trying to discover what sandwichness truly means.

Apologies, as this will be a bit #rambling, but it will come back to #Canadian #politics, I promise.

First, the #categorization of #political views along a single left-right #axis is almost #useless. This has long been known, and alternatives exist that present a much more accurate picture, but the traditional #media is #addicted to "#left this" and "#right that" and is lazy, so they'll probably never get better.

One #alternative was developed by Jerry #Pournelle.

@mitchmarq42xyz Considering #Emacs now has built-in #SQLite support as of v29, it would actually be possible and reasonable to now maintain a proper metadata #database with #tags and #categorization for media.

TIL: Eleanor Rosch profoundly influenced cognitive psychology with her prototype theory, a Copernican revolution in the theory of categorization for its departure from the traditional Aristotelian categories.

Fun fact: While a student, “Rosch had planned for years to go to graduate school in philosophy, but a year with Wittgenstein, she says, “cured her” of philosophy completely.” 🤣

In an age when we're all just entries in some algorithmic spreadsheet somewhere, be a platypus and mess up the categories.

Redbubble is 20% off right now so this fellow is new in the shop to celebrate - get you a sticker or something groovy.

One of Matt Mullenweg’s announcements at the 2022 State of the Word was the addition of new taxonomies for the theme and plugin directories that will help users more quickly ascertain the purpose of the extensions they are considering.

@DrYohanJohn

I have a prediction about this finding, though: I suspect it is a result of training on #static images to just do #categorization.

Corollary prediction: within the next few years we'll see a network trained on #3D #motor #control tasks (more like what humans actually do) and it will show more human-like shape biases.

Since most of my contacts on #mastodon are different from the ones I had on other socials (by the way: nice to meet you all!), here are some #highlights about my research that could be of interest:

H1: in the context of #KR & #Reasoning I have worked on cognitively-inspired models of #categorization integrating prototypes, exemplars and theory-theory views by using "Heterotegeneous Proxytypes Hypothesis". Such framework has led to the development of the DUAL-PECCS system tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108
