I found "Woodcutters" difficult to read because the blistering bitterness of the narrator reminded me of the bitterness I see on here every day. Now I'm finding "Biography of X" stressful to read because of political parallels with the current moment. The problem is reality, not the books.

Passage from Catherine Lacey's "Biography of X":

"... the federal government had been engrossed in World War II, the Southern Territory's future leaders had—through a steady propaganda campaign of radio shows, newspaper reports, posters, pamphlets, and youth outreach programs—convinced a majority of Southerners that every state in the North was being secretly controlled by the Communist Party; an invasion of the South, they said, was imminent. Those who weren't convinced of a Communist invasion were unsteadied enough by the widespread misinformation to feel there was no longer any objective truth, a belief that numbed any part of the population that might have objected to the forced theocracy."

And, finally, next book I'm jumping into is Catherine Lacey's "Biography of X." Super intrigued by the first twenty pages so far!

I like a tiny measure of fellow humans. Things like Twitch or sometimes the news or if I'm in a going out mood a cafe, bookstore, or library… Is #ParallelSocializing specifically a term? Something where people are there, but I’m not directly interacting with them and nothing is required of me by them.
Actually this idea was touched on in a book I read recently, Nobody is Ever Missing by #CatherineLacey, where the main character says something about needing to be around people in a way where they're there, they're observable, but without really being involved with them.

Biography of X by #CatherineLacey will likely be my #1 book of 2023, it's just an absolute masterpiece. This is the first I've read from Lacey, and I predict she'll be one of my favorite authors from here on. #bookstodon

I highly highly recommend Biography of X by #CatherineLacey (fans of #DenisJohnson will get a kick out of a few parts, #Bowie fans too). Picked it up solely on the recommendation of my local bookstore, and it will very likely be my top book of 2023. I'm motoring through it because I can't wait to find out what happens next, and am already planning on rereading it. #bookstodon

Remembering #CatherineLacey (1904-79), the great English stage, television and film actress born in London #OnThisDay. Her acting career spanned six decades, with many scene-stealing film appearances, including the deceptive nun in Hitchcock's #TheLadyVanishes (1938), and as aged eccentrics in Hammer's #TheShadowOfTheCat (1961) and #TheMummysShroud (1967).

Wow. Just. Wow. Biography or novel or autobiography? Dystopian political allegory? Artistic treatise? All these things in a compulsively readable book with a gasp inducing climax. #BiographyOfX #CatherineLacey #Granta @bookstodon
