W historii filmu, czy w ogóle historii mediów, fascynuje mnie wiele rzeczy, ale jedną z najciekawszych są dla mnie przekształcenia w zakresie gatunków – zmiany, jakie się w nich dokonują, narodziny nowych, zanik starych, ich hybrydyzacja i tym podobne.
Weźmy na ten przykład film dżunglowy (jungle film).

Przyznam, że lubię od czasu do czasu wspomnieć różnym osobom, że kiedyś w świadomości widowni film przygodowy z akcją rozgrywającą się w dżungli funkcjonował jako osobny gatunek filmowy, i przyglądać się ich reakcji – czy mi wierzą, czy uważają, że zmyślam.

Tymczasem film dżunglowy faktycznie funkcjonował jako osobna kategoria gatunkowa. Podobnie jak chase film, czyli film pościgowy czy też film gonitwowy. Zasadzał się on na tym, że lwią część filmu stanowił pościg jednej lub większej liczby osób za jakąś postacią. Jeśli jesteście tak sta(rzy/re), jak ja, to być może pamiętacie finały odcinków serialu "Benny Hill". A jeśli pamiętacie, to możecie poczuć się w tym akapicie jak w domu, bo na tym właśnie polegały filmy pościgowe.

Jeśli jednak tego serialu nie znacie lub macie ochotę zobaczyć, jak wyglądały pełnoprawne filmy pościgowe w czasach, gdy cieszyły się popularnością, to zachęcam do rzucenia okiem na film "A złoczyńca wciąż ją ścigał" (And the Villain Still Pursued Her"), znany także jako "Sen autora" (Author's Dream"), z 1906 roku w reżyserii Jamesa Stuarta Blacktona – pioniera filmu animowanego i filmowych efektów specjalnych, o którym planuję w niedalekiej przyszłości coś więcej napisać.
