Julia Kwan’s feature-length #documentary Everything Will Be captures a significant moment of time in #VancouverBC #Chinatown, with the influx of condos and new, non-Chinese businesses. The film follows a year in the life of several #Chinatown denizens, including a 90-year-old #Chinese newspaper street vendor and a second-generation tea shop owner, as they navigate this #community in flux.

This #documentary tells the story of a #Chinese #cemetery in #VictoriaBC that became a #NationalHeritage site. For Chinese #pioneers who died in Canada, Victoria's Chinese Cemetery at #HarlingPoint was a temporary resting place until their bones could be returned home. (Traditional Chinese belief says that the soul of a person who dies in a foreign place wanders lost until their bones are returned home.) This film traces the rich history of the #VancouverIsland cemetery from controversy and neglect to its revival as a #historic site. Told by those closest to it, the story of Harling Point is a metaphor for #Canada , a country still working on making a home for all who live within its borders.

🧵#DocumentaryFilms I've enjoyed this month - in no particular order.

A rich and little-known part of Canadian history unfolds through the stories of the first Chinese women to come to Canada and of subsequent generations of Chinese Canadian women. It is an amazing tale of courageous women who left behind their families, knowing they would never see them again and of girls who were shipped off to the New World to marry men they had never met. These are the women who fought against the many forms of racism they faced in Canada while, at the same time, challenging sexism within their own communities. By passing on language, culture, and values to their children, these women defined what it means to be Chinese Canadian. Beautiful old photographs from family albums, the recollections of seven women who grew up in Canada in the first half of the 20th century, and the memories of narrator and director, Dora Nipp, whose grandfather came to Canada in 1881 to build the railway, create a remarkable story of stunning impact.

Forgot to upload the #bilingual post op care info sheet from Wednesday's final #dental extractions.

I was given slightly different verbal instructions from my dentist before leaving the office. Had to do 1 gentle saltwater swishy rinse, immediately after coming home - just to stop the excessive bleeding. It didn't affect my gums forming good bloodclots, which is an essential part of healing up.

My #dentist is #Chinese. The office is a team of 3 brothers. They're all getting old now. My dentist & his older brother will be retiring in 2-3 years. The youngest dentist brother will also retire shortly after & office will be closed after several decades, at same location.

All info sheets they give to their patients have #ChineseTranslations, with the English instructions. This is because many of their older & also some newer to Canada #ChinesePatients are illiterate in English.

How a thriving #ChineseCommunity was built despite #racism & #hardships.

For the #Chinese community of #Newfoundland & #Labrador it's a thriving community built in spite of racism, hardship & #discriminatory government policy.

📜 The Chinese diaspora ‘needs to rise up’ about atrocities against Uyghurs — Q&A with human rights lawyer Rayhan Asat
Politics & Current Affairs

Rayhan Asat comments on China’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Muslim world’s silence on ongoing rights abuses against Uyghurs in China, and the responsibility of the Chinese diaspora in advocating for human rights.

By Jonathan Landreth
Published October 30, 2023

「Rayhan Asat is one of the most vocal advocates today for the Uyghur people, her people, whose homeland in northwestern China is the scene of the Communist Party’s ongoing commission of what the United Nations says may be “crimes against humanity,” and what U.S. President Joseph Biden called a “genocide.” Among the roughly 1 million Turkic peoples detained, imprisoned, and forced into labor there — most of them Muslims — is Asat’s younger brother. Ekpar Asat was picked up by Chinese authorities and sentenced to 15 years in prison after returning from an educational exchange program in the U.S. sponsored by the Department of State. Speaking from London, Asat called for stronger human rights allies and reflected on the news of the growing conflict in the Middle East and the hypocrisy she sees in China and among global activists who are unwilling to confront China.

This is an edited transcript of our conversation.」

「In any sort of crisis, historically, it ends with the people rising up against the totalitarian government. But I just don’t see how Chinese people would. Chinese people wouldn’t do that out of fear, ignorance and lack of solidarity. They wouldn’t. There is less sense of civic duty.」

Have decided to read "Yellowface" by Rebecca K. Kuang. There seems to be quite a bit of controversy about it. Will be interesting to see why... I'm just looking to continue my journey of literature about the Chinese diaspora.

I hope to be able to turn it into a teachable topic at some point. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears 😃

An informative nitter🧵by the WaPo article's co-author, #ShibaniMahtani:

「When I started conceptualizing my new role as an investigative correspondent, I knew one of the stories I wanted to dig into was how & why extreme pro-Beijing narratives are hardening within parts of multicultural Singapore, my home. Here is what we found:」

「In an ecosystem where people including my friend's parents get forwarded extremely pro-CCP messages that veer on explicit Han chauvinism within this multi-racial society, Zaobao -- a respected, trusted newspaper backed by the state -- can provide a counterweight. It has not.」

⚠️ The de-facto capture of Singapore would be a huge strategic win for the Chinese Communist Party, and they are making solid progress in realizing that morsel of the CCP's "china dream".

Historically Hong Kong — "CCP's banking colony" — has been CCP's main avenue of economic and foreign trade manipulation, akin to a poker swindler holding two sets of cards. Since the 2019-2020 crushing of #Hongkongers' hopes of ever gaining 'treaty-enshrined' civil or human rights, the manipulative value of HK is on a terminal decline. Capturing Singapore to act as CCP's new banking and business colony would indeed recharge CCP's ability to project power in the region and globally.

Better yet, SG would become a hostile port to the US and other countries in the alliance of democracies if and when the CCP decides to, say, invade #Taiwan.

It has been a long game decades in the making, but CCP's humongous United Front tentacles working to weaponize and 'han-chauvinize' its *subjects* in the large and highly ethnocentric Chinese diaspora are bearing bittersweet fruit.

Oh, and the inner workings of those fancy F35s must be quite fascinating.

The Joss house at Garibaldi (North East #Tasmania ) circa 1885. One of Tasmania’s first Chinese buildings. It’s no longer there, some of it’s ritual objects now reside at the museum in #Launceston #ChineseDiaspora #histodon

I’ve always viewed myself as an outsider. Because I look the way I do in a predominantly white country. Lately, I’ve been seeing more people who look like me but I don’t fit there either. I can’t speak their languages, I’ve lost my culture. My self-identity is inbetween. I’m “other”. Do you feel “othered” in your localities? What places do you feel at home in? #identity #individual #ChineseDiaspora #diaspora #culture
