Good morning. ☕☕☕

31 August 2025

It's the last day of August, fall is around the corner, winter is coming.

For the last couple of years, lovebugs haven’t been all that bad. Knock on wood. They’re still around, just not as thick as in previous seasons. Maybe I’ve stopped noticing—no more daily commute means fewer bug smacks on the grill and windshield.

Still, when they’re swarming, they get into everything. Let’s just say they’re persistently annoying.

Most birds steer clear of them, thanks to their mildly acidic taste. I haven’t tasted one myself—at least not on purpose. I do ride a motorcycle.

From what I’ve read, warblers and chickadees might eat them, which could help a little in the backyard. Here’s hoping they develop a taste for inconvenience.

“Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.” — Douglas Coupland

"Four small birds animate a field of fresh snow, each one a punctuation mark in a quiet winter sentence. The snow is smooth and pale, like a blank canvas awaiting the brush of motion.

Two of the birds are American Goldfinches, their plumage a vivid yellow that seems almost defiant against the cold. One goldfinch is mid-air, suspended just above the surface, wings tucked and body angled downward in a gentle descent. It’s not diving, not startled—just arriving, as if dropped from a quiet sky. The moment is brief but ceremonial, like a note falling into place in a silent melody.

The second goldfinch is grounded, head lowered, pecking at the snow with quiet intent. Its black-and-white wing markings form a sharp contrast against the white, like ink on paper.

Nearby, two chipping sparrows offer a softer palette—brown, gray, and a touch of rust. One stands still, its posture contemplative, while the other lifts a foot mid-step, caught between motion and pause. Their presence feels less dramatic than the goldfinches’, but no less deliberate.

The birds are spaced apart, each claiming its own small radius of stillness. There’s no background—no trees, no horizon—just the snow and the birds, suspended in a moment that feels both fleeting and composed." - Copilot

Rust-Crowned Sentinel

Every time I spot a chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), its subtle earth-toned plumage and rust-colored cap remind me of military camouflage—giving these little birds an unexpectedly rugged appearance. During the winter and early spring, they seemed to be everywhere, their numbers in the hundreds. Now, only a handful remain, occasionally seen foraging on the ground. I read that their diet shifts with the seasons, transitioning from seeds in the colder months to insects in the warmth of spring and summer.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

"This chipping sparrow sits with quiet dignity on a slender branch, its small frame a study in subtle beauty. A rich, rust-colored cap crowns its head, contrasting with the crisp white stripe above its eye—like an artist’s deliberate brushstroke. Its body is dressed in muted grays and soft browns, delicately streaked to blend effortlessly with the woodland shadows. The sparrow’s beak, sharp and precise, catches the light as it angles slightly to the right, appearing both alert and at ease. Surrounding the bird, a web of blurred branches and earthy tones forms a gentle backdrop, accentuating the sparrow’s presence without distraction. The lighting embraces the fine textures of its feathers, giving them a soft yet detailed radiance, as if nature itself has paused to admire this quiet moment." - Copilot

Sparrow Standoff

I captured this fleeting interaction between a flying house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and what I believe to be a perched chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) on a trellis. It may be a territorial dispute, or simply an exchange of instinct-driven behavior. Observing birds interact is always fascinating, offering a glimpse into their complex communication and dynamics.

"This captivating image captures a dynamic interaction between a house sparrow and a chipping sparrow, frozen in a moment of tension and movement. The house sparrow, with its distinctive brown plumage and black bib, is in mid-flight, ascending toward the perch where the chipping sparrow is already stationed. Its wings are partially spread, revealing intricate feather details as it prepares to land, its body angled slightly upward in an effort to reach the branch.

Meanwhile, the chipping sparrow reacts with clear agitation—its beak wide open, seemingly issuing a warning or complaint. The delicate rust-colored cap on its head contrasts against its pale chest and streaked back, making its sharp expression all the more pronounced. The positioning of the birds suggests an unspoken dispute—perhaps a territorial defense or an exchange of quick, instinctual communication.

The surrounding branches frame the interaction, their muted tones offering a natural contrast to the vibrant detail of the birds. The lighting enhances the textures of their feathers, emphasizing every soft curve and sharp edge, while the background remains blurred, keeping full attention on the unfolding scene. The interplay of motion, expression, and positioning turns this into a striking representation of avian dynamics." Copilot

Sparrow's Prize Moment

Chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) are abundant right now, though they will soon begin their migration north in the coming months. While I often spot them at my bird feeders enjoying seeds, they are also known to feed on insects. Here is one captured in a remarkable moment, perched with a small green caterpillar in its beak.

Nature's Minimalist

The plumage of chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) provides excellent camouflage. In the original photo of this bird, I had to carefully search to spot it among the bare branches of the tree. At this time of year, these birds are abundant, but in the coming weeks, they will migrate back to the north.

"The scene is alive with bird activity around the wooden bird feeder. A goldfinch is caught mid-flight on the left, wings spread and feet reaching forward, ready to land. On the feeder itself, there are four goldfinches, their vibrant yellow feathers making them stand out. Sharing the space are a chipping sparrow, with its streaked brown and white feathers, and a house sparrow, whose subdued brown and gray tones add variety. The house sparrow appears to be turning toward the approaching goldfinch, almost as if in a moment of greeting. The image captures a charming interaction between the birds—a perfect snapshot of nature's lively rhythms." - Copilot
