@joan_de_art makes great solarpunk art. You've likely seen one of these floating around, but I found the source if one wanted to know. Anyways, these do a good job of introducing solarpunk ideals and capturing the spirit of solarpunk design.

A detailed artwork of a solarpunk environment emphasizing clean water canals, native plant growing, community composting, rain collection, urban gardening, sharing food, and using ethical energy.A detailed artwork of a solarpunk home emphasizing community gardens, rain collection, sharing resources (honesty boxes), solar energy, dwarf fruit trees, beekeeping, using roof space. and using a pulley system to the roof. pictured is a pride flag.A detailed artwork of a solarpunk city plaza meant to be animal safe/welcoming. It has a wildlife corridor, pet friendly public transportation trains running. dovecoates and birbaths, a fenced dog park, a pond for aquatics with a rainbow walking bridge, a greenhouse style butterfly house, windows with bird strike stickers, and various highly walkable lanes for walking and bikes/skating. Around the plaza is various animal businesses: rescue center, vegan kitchen, feed store, a cat cafe, vet clinic, and a wildlife rehab center. Above the plaza is pet friendly housing with rooftop gardens and built-in greenhouses. Renewable energy such as large solar panels are also emphasized.A detailed artwork of a solarpunk city recreational/third space. There's a skatepark, sensory garden, LARPing arena with tree houses, wheelchair inclusive playground with aquatic aspects, community food pantry, a daycare, a soccer/multi use field, a bonfire area, public restrooms with changing stations, a teen cafe, a public pool. above/around the open area are related businesses: youth art center, library, snack stand, vegan food cart, health clinic, showers, toy and clothing swap, lactation support, children's museum, and many bike/walking friendly paths. In the far background, the apartments are sound proof. Renewable energy such as wind turbines and shading nets are emphasized for ethical energy/saving energy.

I love this essay by Deb Chachra @debcha (I've read it several times) but this quote strikes me every time, the clarity with which it articulates the self interest of the rich as necessary precondition to caring for the poor

'the wealthy taxpayers of Boston were convinced to build out water and sewage systems by a straightforward logic: every person in the city, rich or poor, needed clean water to drink every day. Without it, they would be at risk of contracting water-borne diseases like cholera. And with so many people in proximity, wealth alone couldn’t provide protection from contagious disease'

This ought to be good. What if the “messy,” unplanned parts of cities — the slums, the informal markets, the self-built homes — are not failures, but the city’s own rough draft?

Echanove and Srivastava argue that urbanism should start with the people who shape cities every day, not just the officials who plan them from above.

A great freight rail project in Australia, but not everything goes swimmingly.
My take: freight giants like Lynfox will do anything to sabotage projects like this to protect their trucking dominance. We need rail for efficiency and emissions reduction, not more road freight.

“The federal government is hunting for a justification to eliminate key bike lanes in the nation's capital, sources say — and if the feds are able to push that controversial agenda through, some fear it could set a disturbing new precedent for federal interference into active transportation projects across the nation.” 🤬

This article lumps informal transport in with private cars and app-based cabs as part of the city's problem. Seriously? Informal transport is likely the stopgap that is preventing total gridlock.

Eliminate crime in the slums through housing 1936]

This poster is titled "Eliminate Crime in the Slums Through Housing" and it's a print on board, specifically designed as an advertisement. It features bold silkscreen colors that contrast against one another with dark shades of gray dominating most parts. A stylized man holding a gun appears prominently to symbolize violence or crime while standing before rows of simplified architectural forms depicting tenement buildings.

The poster is associated with the New York City Housing Authority, indicating it was likely created during an initiative focused on addressing urban issues such as housing and community safety through planned living spaces in densely populated areas. The use of stark imagery—like a figure wielding a weapon against the backdrop of urban structures—is effective at visually communicating its message: that constructing better-housing solutions is integral to reducing crime rates within communities.

The bottom right corner bears the inscription "U.S.A WORKS WPA," referencing the Works Progress Administration, an agency established during Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal economic relief program in 1935 and aimed at employing millions of jobless Americans as well as providing useful public services.
This specific poster is a clear example of how government agencies utilized art to communicate social messages about urban challenges like crime prevention throu [...]

Induced demand isnt only a thing in public transport and city planning, i think.

it seems to apply to other human societies and communities too.

before creating a channel for selfies on my friendgroup discord (i know, but you try moving them over smh), nobody posted selfies. Before creating a channel for MMORPGs, nobody posted about their MMO game progress.

You build it, they will come
