I just finished Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara. It tells the story of the horrible conditions in which cobalt miners work in the Congo. Cobalt is used in the batteries of all the rechargeable devices that power our economy. People at every level are complicit in the exploitation of these and so many other workers. When we purchase rechargeable devices, we are complicit, too. So what do we do? I believe we must do something. #ModernSlavery #Cobalt #CobaltRed #Technology #Books

I finished reading Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara last week: tragedy in cobalt mines in the Congo, adults and children dying, terrible working conditions, exposure to toxins. Ethical sourcing of cobalt doesn't really exist as so much of the system is failing the workers.
The author's main argument is for better protections for workers as the rechargeable battery is here to stay, but it's a perfect reminder of how our consumption is so privileged and dangerous. #CobaltRed #WorkersRights
