Wildlife weekend. We had two black bear cubs visit our back yard, and then watched a common loon while out for a paddle. The bear cubs eventually fell out the tree. The loon is covered in little flies - spring time at the lake.

Two black bear cubs in a pine tree. One is on the trunk and the other is out on a flattened limb. The branches are fairly sparse. The one on the trunk is quite black, and the one on the limb is lighter brown. Eventually they both fell out the tree :)

Yesterday's close encounter off Pike’s Point with this stunning Common Loon (or Great Northern Diver, depending on where you’re from) was something else.

Dressed in its dramatic black-and-white breeding plumage, with red eyes that seem to stare right through you, this bird is built for stealth and speed—like a feathered submarine. I watched as it cruised through the glassy water, throwing a cautious glance toward my camouflaged setup. It knew something was off, but not enough to keep it from coming in close.

Their haunting calls echo across foggy mornings on Eagle Lake, adding an eerie soundtrack to these moments. And with their incredible diving skills, they’re perfectly suited to catch the tui chub that abound in these waters.

The Common Loon (aka Great Northern Diver, Gavia immer) is a striking and memorable bird, known for its eerie calls that echo across Eagle Lake—especially on foggy mornings. I saw this one yesterday off Pike’s Point, decked out in full breeding plumage, with that dagger bill, red eyes, and a front patch that looks like a bow tie. Its body shape reminds me of a nuclear sub—probably no coincidence. I was under camo netting, so while it clocked me as “suspicious,” it didn’t bolt. I got this frame as it swam by, keeping one wary eye on the weird new lump on the shoreline.

The common loon, also known as great northern diver, can be found in the Neactic realm, meaning the Northern US and Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Alaska and Bear Island (Norway).

As the name suggests, these cuties are great divers and expert fishers. Fish make up about 80% of their diet. They can catch and eat fish roughly 1/3 of their own size, which is pretty impressive! Fortunately, their status is, as of now, "Least Concern", so they are not in threat of extinction any time soon.

The common loon appears on a Canadian coin and is also the state bird of Minnesota. It makes a prominent appearance in several Native American tales, where it usually helps the protagonist achieve a goal; in some stories, the world was even created by a loon.

FUN FACT
Do you know movies in which a wailing bird cry is used to evoke a sense of wilderness and suspense? Chances are you're hearing the call of a loon there!
