We’ve let our #CommonMilkweed go wild this year. We were starting to lose hope about seeing #monarchs but suddenly we now have 14 #caterpillars and have seen one adult today in #Indianapolis #Indiana.

So awesome to see them visit us!

More of my pollinator garden work in progress about the future of pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems.

I’m thinking about a variety of futures possible for pollination and pollinators. Planting native plants wherever you are can foster these species on whom we and our ecosystems depend.

the best example of a milkweed that was top-pruned and how it is growing a huge amount of new leaves!
(if you look closely you can see where it was pruned, and how there are three new "branches" of leaves growing from that spot!)

#Asclepias syriaca, Common Milkweed, is a food source for many flies, beetles, ants, bees, wasps, and butterflies (including Monarchs!).

The #InserttAnInvert2024 prompt this week is eggs. The suggestion was to highlight how some species (mainly arachnids) take great care of eggs, carrying them around until they hatch, I thought I would talk about the opposite: the pitfalls of laying eggs & bailing, but worse of having a specific host for eggs like milkweed. Female monarchs lay a single eggs, usually on the underside of a young 🧵1

My linocut print on ivory Japanese washi paper, 9.25” x 12.5”, displayed on white square, of “My milkweed brings all the bugs to the yard”. It shows a milkweed plant with stem and leaves printed in blue-green on yellow-green, with two round blooms full of florets printed in pale mauve on pale pink. On a leaf is a milkweed beetle in black on red. Above one bloom is a bumblebee in black and yellow and above the other is a monarch butterfly in pale and dark orange, white and black.

My local library has planted #nativeplants around their building. There have about 2 dozen #commonmilkweed plants near the back door, which are hosting these #redmilkweedbeetles (here #makingmorebeetles). #nature #photography #insects #spring

The red beetles with the big antennae and black spots and legs are red milkweek beetles. These are common milkweed flower buds. I will come back and take pictures once they open.

Some baby large milkweed bugs I took pictures of on September 16th 2020, in Pennsylvania! I was just going through my tumblr blog and looking for more old pictures I haven't put on iNaturalist yet :)

They came to the common milkweed in our yard there for the two(?) years since I noticed it and let it grow. I always loved watching them, I called them my babies :)

(Edit: BTW all my photos are public domain unless I specify otherwise, you are encouraged to save / share this wherever you want :) )

A photograph of a cluster of large milkweed bugs gathered on a common milkweed pod. The milkweed bugs are in various stages of growth, with some very small and other almost adult size. All are bright red and orange in color, with black heads, antenne and legs. Those closer to being adults also have small, still-forming black wings on their backs. The milkweed pod is light green and covered with soft spikes. The leaves are dark green, and there is a chainlink fence visible in the background.
