In the words of Bayard Rustin, civil rights icon and a member of Dr. Martin Luther King’s inner circle, “in the long run, the only way I could be a free, whole person was to face the shit.”

Community Psychology: Linking Individuals and Communities

The fourth edition of this acclaimed textbook provides an in-depth and engaging overview of community psychology, including its theoretical underpinnings and methods for conducting research and promoting change within communities. This book aims to get students, including non-psychology majors, excited about the field and being agents of social change.

@bookstodon

New to this edition are an increased focus on values, particularly those related to social justice, empowering minority communities, and solving complex societal problems—like poverty, oppression, and climate change—across multiple ecological levels.
New research and case examples present important developments in the field and society at large, accompanied by extensive discussion questions that will encourage self-reflection and help students apply key concepts to their own lives. A new marginal glossary also highlights important concepts.
Chapter summaries, recommended videos and other resources, review questions, sample lecture slides, and other materials for students and instructors are available on the book’s companion website (http://pubs.apa.org/books/supp/kloos4/).
Review
A successful textbook is one that grabs and maintains students’ attention. This is such a book. It engages students through exercises, questions, and stories while promoting self-reflection and even critique of its content. It is truly an exceptional pedagogical tool. -- Irma Serrano-García, Professor (Retired), Department of Psychology, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Published On: 2020-07-01

I was privileged to meet Ibrahim Makkawi in Ramallah 10 years ago.
His life and works give an insight into the Palestinian situation under colonialism.

@beverleyjane Hi Beverley... Since joining the #therapist world have been struck by how much enthusiasm there is for ongoing learning!

When you say community, you mean community of therapists on here, or community more broadly. Part of an (emerging) therapist collective here and really interested in community therapy and how the two ideas/practices can be knit together

Wrote something for the latest edition of Psychology Aotearoa about bicultural practice - "Starting challenging conversations: The NSCBI Pākehā/Tauiwi Caucus 2022 webinar series"

It is a reflective piece summarising a few things we tried this year, feel free to take a gander, and to share your own thoughts/suggestions

It's open access 😊

FREE WEBINAR - DECOLONISING MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEMS

SPEAKERS: PAT DUDGEON, WAIKAREMOANA WAITOKI, JEFFREY ANSLOOS, VICTORIA M. O'KEEFE, LEILANI DARWIN, CLINTON SCHULTZ

In this webinar, six Indigenous global leaders in mental health and wellbeing, from four colonised countries (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States of America), will share their experiences of walking in two worlds and of navigating mental health systems to ensure the wellbeing, healing, and self-determination of Indigenous peoples.

A holistic worldview is offered that moves away from the deficit- and individually- focused narrative of mental illness and considers the social, cultural, political, and historical context of health and the structural drivers of health inequality.

Learning Objectives:
🔆Understand what is meant by a holistic view of health

🔆Identify systems level strategies for decolonising mental health

🔆Describe the importance of Indigenous knowledge systems, culture, and community in healing
