Let me share one of the pictures from todays #physics data analyis work.

It is a Dalitz plot visualizing the fractions of the signals in three photodiodes registering scintillation light excited by #cosmicrays #muons in a big Bismuth-Germanium-Oxide #BGO crystal. The colors represent different data selection criteria.

Purple dots are low energy environental gamma ray background. Yellow dots are cosmic rays muons that hit a trigger before passing through the crystal. Green dots are cosmic rays that directly hit a photodiode, ionizing the silicon, in addtion to the light. Red dots are all events that pass the selection criteria of the sensor.

Space Weather

As this week's major geomagnetic storm subsides, the Forbush Decrease (reduction in galactic cosmic rays caused by the CME bow-shock) is still having an effect as it spreads out into the solar system.

The Oulu neutron monitor is still registering a rate around 10% lower than the background rate over the last month.

The photography of an air shower detector array located in a scenic landscape of the Andes mountains. The array consist of 97 units using plastic scintillators to detect the cascade of particles produced by high energy cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere.

This was a major theme of the recent CDY meeting in Dublin. Galactic microquasars are definitely plausible candidates as sources of cosmic rays with rigidities of a Pv and above (the long-sought Pevatrons).

I'm back on my laptop.

"Back?"

Yes, last Friday, just before my date came over, my laptop experienced a hardware failure.

I tried to figure out what happened on Friday, to no avail. I had to set my work aside to take care of my date.

Yesterday, I used my desktop to access Mastodon, Discord, etc. I continued looking for what had happened, but that was also futile.

After an upgrade on Friday, my laptop was not rebooting normally. I eventually was able to get to the BIOS screen, but the computer clock was off. The Windows installation looked fine, but I never actually used it. The Linux partition looked zapped... I'm not sure what happened there. Did the BIOS try to perform a recovery maneuver and zap it?

I recovered my data from a backup. The SDD hasn't given more problems. I'm tempted to chalk it up to cosmic rays hitting the BIOS.
