Down Home Blues is an album by blues musicians Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry recorded in 1960 and released on the Bluesville label.

AllMusic reviewer Bruce Eder stated: "the music itself stands outside of time. McGhee's strumming and singing have enough polish to pass as a commercial recording, but at its best, it's still sufficiently unaffected so as to be regarded as authentic country-blues. It's Terry's harp, however, that really pulls this body of music back to its roots ... the dominant elements of this album are the charm and honesty that Terry and McGhee offer, whatever their particular style on a specific song; they had portions of both to spare by the bucketload, which accounts for the 15 years that they held audiences in their spell". - Wikipedia

And much like my Vaselines post a few posts back, a million thanks to Kurt Cobain for introducing me to Leadbelly.

I’ve only appreciated Leadbelly’s music more and more as I’ve grown older, and this is just one of several Leadbelly records in my library. Any are as good as another, as they’re the type of records you can take start to finish knowing you’re in good hands for the duration.

I have a fairly large #countryblues section in my library to begin with, but Leadbelly has been played more than any other artist from that section. Also, his music is something I love playing guitar along to. Nothing better than pouring a whiskey and hangin’ with Huddie.

was an acoustic music sensation. As I understand it, she learned to play the blues from her father's records. Here she shows some more range. Elvis Presley said this is the saddest song he ever heard but it seems to me you'll be happy to hear Muireann Bradley sing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry."

This Japanese pressing sounds INSANE, and Mojo Hand might be my favorite #blues album ever.

Originally meant to be a 79 minute opus, it was released at a single LP that clocks in at just under 39 mins.

There’s a CD reissue version that has all 79 minutes that I’ve heard, & the stuff is incredible.

There’s a 2xLP 4 Men With Beards issue that is total trash on all fronts; both in sound quality and in egregious edits.

Hoping we get a proper full vinyl issue done right at some point.

A critical and important artist, and an unquestioned genius.

This is a ‘67 stereo mix of this masterpiece, a #folk #countryblues album that pushed the genres to their boundaries by Fahey’s primitive sounding guitar & unconscious poetry.
Dude was also a visionary for starting Takoma, which introduced the world to Leo Kottke.
He only got more experimental going forward, particularly his two late #90s albums.
