Day 8:

14 Mar 2025, feeling crabby in Gran Canaria.

Two dark red/brown crabs on a wet gray rock
2025-12-04

It's day 4 of 25 days of Crustmas over on Bluesky. And this crab is probably about the same age? I was very surprised to learn that this is what larval crabs look like. I think it's either Xantho sp. or Carcinus maenas.

P.S.: The feathery things at the top are the cirri of a barnacle and are not part of the larva.

Photo of a zoea larva under a microscope. It has a very large compound eye and a long dorsal thorn that curves back on its carapace. The abdomen is long and thin, ending in curved spine(s) at the telson.
Above the zoea is the exoskeleton of the cirri ("feeding legs") of a barnacle.

Watch out! This kelp crab is waiting for a chance to grab you! (On a piling under the wharf.) New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/202 #VancouverIsland #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #Crabs #MarineInvertebrates #NaturePhotography

An underwater photo. On the left, there's a barnacle-covered piling. On the piling, there's a kelp crab, blurry in the semi-dark and the moving water. He is stretching out his long chelipeds, pinching jaws wide open, ready to grab anything that comes near. (Does he see me, above him, with the camera?)
The crab is brown, with bits of orange. The water is green, with whitish reflections.

Here's my October recap! Four dives, not a ton of critters out, but I did find a few interesting subjects.

Puget Sound has crabs.

An invasive species of European green crabs, “one of the world’s most harmful marine species,” has been detected in the Salish Sea. They “damage bed sediments, leading to the loss of eelgrass, an essential habitat for Dungeness crab and Pacific salmon.”

The Tulalip Tribes reported “detection of a green crab in the southern Whidbey Basin at Mission Beach” earlier this year.

Get outta here, crabbies!

Dive number: 716
Date / time: Sun Oct 26, 2025 6:46 PM
Dive site: Fort Wetherill, Rhode Island
Water Temperature: 57F
Bottom Time: 1h40

Super quiet dive at Fort Wetherill. There wasn't very much to see other than a few skates, a tiny sea robin in the sand, one butterflyfish buried in the rocks, and one coronetfish in the eel grass. I only took 37 pictures in 1h40 underwater.

Have you ever seen the granulate shellback crab (Hypoconcha arcuata)? Growing about 0.6 in (1.4 cm) long, this unusual-looking crustacean inhabits coastlines along parts of the western Atlantic, with a range that includes parts of the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. Unlike hermit crabs—which hide inside their chosen shells—this critter uses its posterior legs to secure shells onto its back, often shouldering pieces larger than its own body, as a defense against foes.

Hidden giant: An expedition to the world’s largest #coral colony whoi.edu/oceanus/feature/hidde

"Hiding in plain sight for centuries, the mega coral has quietly thrived in the crystal blue waters of the #SolomonIslands in the South Pacific. Spanning the size of two basketball courts and built from 1 billion polyps, the massive colony is thought to be more than 300 years old... The enormous structure provides habitat and breeding grounds for an array of species, including #shrimp, #crabs, and #fish"
