For #saturdaySolitude - some abstract #industrialArchaeology above #Cromford, #Derbyshire. Including remnants of an old tramway up past Black Rocks, and a pile of stacked, worked masonry in the overgrown Barreledge Quarry... 1/n
Huge, rounded rock - pale on top in the diffuse sunlight and darkening to black at the sides and base - surrounded by deciduous woodlands.A tumbled-down ridge of worked masonry - covered in moss, with no mortar - in an incline up the side of a steep hill. An old tramway, for transporting stone down to the valley?A view up the remnants of the pathway - centre worn smooth by modern feet, with tree roots and fallen stones complicating the route.A large, vaguely rectangular pile of worked masonry, covered in moss and surrounded by ferns and deciduous trees.

Something enjoyable - taking a photo of a small, odd-looking bug with camera at arm's length, trying not to fall into a canal, getting home and seeing the results and thinking - what the heck's *that*?

Pretty sure it's a Mystacides azurea var. albicornis - a caddisfly. Look at those maxillary palps!

On a nettle leaf, a small, narrow insect with dark, shiny blue-black wings folded into long, sharp triangles covering its back - white legs protrude from underneath. The head has two round, brown-red compound eyes, two incredibly long white, thread-like antennae going forwards and curling out slightly, and two dark, almost crab-like jointed appendages. "Distinctive large and hairy maxillary palps used in mating" apparently, according to NatureSpot.(It's a male.)

For #saturdaySolitude - Lea Wood, above #Cromford canal, earlier today.

#Derbyshire #woodlands
Silver-trunked birch trees on a steep fern-covered hillside, seen from below - with a heavily striated outcrop of stone with an apparent entrance to a small cave.Twisted, gnarled treetrunk, partly covered in moss, surrounded by leafy green woodlands.

Mmm, out walking around #Cromford, just up above #Middleton at the moment. It is sunny but not too hot, there's a slight breeze, and I can hear church bells in the distance. This is being at peace.

For #saturdaySolitude (which is absolutely a thing now) - a view of the canal in #Cromford, #Derbyshire with the faintest hints of spring. February 2025. (Yes! I also post new photos on here, as well as stuff up to 20+ years old!)

#reflections
Wintry, wooded bank covered in narrow, scrubby trees, bare of foliage - with one larger, more curved tree right up against the edge of a flat, almost mirror-like, blue-green, linear and narrow body of water. The trees are reflected in this water, disrupted by faint ripples.

One interesting side-effect of using decent cameras for A While is that older photos become unstuck from time - perfectly clear, immaculately preserved digital captures of a particular time and place.

One of these photos was from Then, another from Now - of the Aqueduct Cottage off the canal at #Cromford, #Derbyshire.

An old stone doorway, surrounded by ivy and partially covered in peeling paint - leading into a room open to the air, littered with debris and a fallen, rotting roof joist crossing the view at an angle. April 2014.An old stone doorway, from the same angle as before - immaculately clean and surrounded by neat, rougher stonework - leading into a clean and tidy, enclosed room with a few items of furniture and the wooden structure of a staircase crossing the view at an angle. February 2025.
