Stigmata

This is one of our founder’s favorite religious subjects!!! She ABSOLUTELY loves this particular subject matter. She loved the 1999 movie titled Stigmata, starring Patricia Arquette & Gabriel Byrne. She gives 9.5/10. Even though Rotten Tomatoes may not agree. If anyone is interested in watching this movie, it’s currently on PlutoTV (which is completely free) & Prime Video (you have to pay for Prime, but the movie is free to watch on Prime).

This is the bodily wounds, scars, & pain which appear in the same body parts of Jesus’ crucifixion wounds: the hands, wrists, feet, near the heart, the head (from the crown of thorns), & back (from carrying the cross & scourging). A stigma (singular) is a mark on the skin. A person having the wounds of stigmata is called a stigmatist or a stigmatic.

St. Francis of Assisi is considered the 1st recorded stigmatic. Several 20th century doctors studied St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin’s reported an astounding 50-year stigmata.

Stigmatics are usually a Roman Catholic phenomenon. The Eastern Orthodox Church offers no official view on them. In Galatians 6:17, Paul said: “…for I bear in my body the marks for the Lord Jesus.”

Some stigmatics show a few, or all, of the Five Sacred Wounds that Jesus had forced on Him during his Passion, according to Biblical passages. In the 20th century, Marie Rose Ferron had been photographed many times with the Crown of Thorns stigmata. Others reported a form that has the stigmatics “crying” tears of blood.

Many stigmatics stigmata stops & starts, especially the times after receiving the (Holy) Communion. An exceptional number of stigmatics show a great desire to take/receive Communion often.

A proportionally high percentage of stigmatics exhibit inedia. Inedia, or Breatharianism, is the alleged ability for a person/human being to live without eating food, & in some cases, drinking water. These stigmatics only eat/drink the (Holy) Eucharist exclusively.

There are even some stigmatics who claim to feel the pain of wounds that aren’t visible. This is called “invisible stigmata.”

Some stigmatics’ wounds won’t clot. The wounds stay fresh & uninfected. The blood from these wounds is said to have a pleasing, perfumed odor. This smell is called the “Odor of Sanctity.”

People who have gotten stigmata often are described as estatics. Because they’re so overwhelmed when they receive the stigmata.

Here’s a few who were stigmatics:

  • St. Ansbert of Rouen
  • St. Francis of Assisi
  • St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina
  • St. Mariam Thresia Chiramel

As of 1997, only 7 stigmatics have been declared saints by the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Rose of Lima

She was born Isabel Flores de Oliva (April 20, 1586-August 24, 1617). She was a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic in Lima, Peru, Spanish Empire. She was known for her life of severe penance & her care of the poor of the city through her own private efforts.

Rose of Lima was born to a noble family & is the patroness saint of embroidery, gardening, cultivation of blooming flowers, florists, embroiderers, sewing lace, gardeners, people ridiculed or misunderstood for their piety, the resolution of family quarrels, against vanity, & the indigenous peoples of the Americas. She was the 1st person born in the Americas to be canonized as a saint.

As a saint, Rose of Lima has been designated as a co-patroness of the Philippines, along with Pudentiana. Both saints were moved to Second-class patronage in September 1942 by Pope Pius XII. But Rose remains the main patroness of Peru & the local people of Latin America. Her image was formerly featured on the highest denomination banknote of Peru.

Her nickname “Rose” comes from a story in her infancy: a servant claimed to have seen her face change into a rose. In 1597, Isabel was confirmed by the Archbishop of Lima, Toribio de Mogrovejo, who was also declared a saint. She then formally changed her name to Rose (Rosa in Spanish) at that time.

When she was a young girl, she copied Catherine of Siena. She started praying 3x a week & performed severe penances in secret. She was admired for her beauty. She cut off her hair & rubbed peppers on her face, to distract from her beauty. She was upset that men were starting to notice her, & not for her spirituality. She turned away all of her suitors. Her family wasn’t having any of that.

Much to her parents’ chigrin, Rose spent a LOT of time thinking about the Blessed Sacrament, which she received daily. This is rare, & odd, for the time. She wanted to take a vow of virginity. But her parents didn’t want that! Out of frustration, her dad gave her a room to herself at the family home.

In addition to fasting, she permanently abstained from eating meat. She helped the sick & hungry around her community. She would bring them to the room, her dad built, to take care of the sick. To help her family financially, Rose would sell fine needlework she made. She would also take flowers to the market to sell as well.

To help the poor, she would make & sell lace & embroidery. This was in addition to all the prayer & she did penance in a small grotto she’d built. She was otherwise a recluse. She only left her room to go to church.

She attracted the attention of the friars of the Dominican Order. She wanted to become a nun. But her dad wasn’t hearing any of that noise. So instead, she entered the Third Order of St. Dominic, while she was living in her parents’ home.

When she was 20, she started wearing the habit of a tertiary & took a vow of perpetual virginity. A tertiary is a lay member of a religious order’s Third Order, who lives in the secular (worldly) world while they strive for Christian perfection by following the spiritual way of life associated with that particular order. The First Order is the clergy, the Second Order is the religious women in the community (official nuns).

She allowed herself only 2 hours a night of sleep, at most, so she could have more time to devote to prayer. She also wore a heavy metal crown made of silver, that had small spikes on the inside. This was to imitate the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus.

For 11 years, she lived like this. Throughout this time, there would be periods of ecstasy. She passed away on August 24, 1617, at the age of 31. She had been battling a long illness. It’s said that she prophesied her death date.

Her funeral was held in the cathedral. It was attended by all the public authorities of Lima. August 23 is her feast day. It’s August 30th in the Traditional calendar.

Rose was beatified by Pope Clement IX on May 10, 1667. She was canonized on April 12, 1671 by Pope Clement I. She was the first Catholic in the Americas to be officially declared a saint.

Her shine is inside of the convent of St. Dominic in Lima. The Catholic Church says that many miracles happened after her death: she cured a leper; & at the time of her death, the city of Lima smelled like roses; roses started falling from the sky.

Rose’s skull, surmounted with a crown of roses, is on public display at the Basilica in Lima, Peru.

For a minute, I thought I had lost this one. Over a year old, this crown of thorns cactus was in a pretty bad shape, but with some TLC and plenty of patience it came back showcasing an exuberance of tiny red flores confirming spring is now finally here! 😍👍🏻

The Crown – Crown of Thorns Review

By Carcharodon

The Crown is a metal institution. These Swedes have been pumping out furious death-infused thrash for over 25 years, with no real missteps. Indeed, we at AMG Industries have been tongue-bathing them since, Doomsday King, their 2010 comeback following a six-year hiatus, on which a younger, looser Steel Druhm splurged a (rather generous) 4.5. The slightly more divisive Death Is Not Dead (2015) saw original vocalist Johan Lindstrand return and garnered a gushing 4.0, as did 2018’s Cobra Speed Venom (although I can’t blame Steel for either of those). Indeed, it wasn’t until 2021’s Royal Destroyer that a dose of that famed AMG restraint was introduced, with a ‘mere’ 3.0 awarded. This rash of high scores—from three different reviewers—goes some way to showing both the consistency of The Crown’s output and the regard in which they are held. Back with their 12th full-length, Crown of Thorns, I’m the fourth reviewer here to tackle output from The Crown. I do hope that doesn’t bode ill for that poor, savaged score safety counter.

If anyone was afraid that, a quarter of a century into their career, The Crown would suddenly have a ‘moment’ (like The Haunted did on Unseen, for example), you can relax. Well, not relax exactly, but stop worrying. Crown of Thorns rips into furious, pummelling life right out the gates on “I Hunt with the Devil.” A lot of Crown of Thorns hearkens back to Cobra Speed Venom or even Doomsday King, leaning into At the Gates (“God-King”) and even Dark Tranquility (“Martyrian”). The Amon Amarth vibes, which were strong on Royal Destroyer, are dialed back, as are the longer songs, with only two clearing the five-minute mark (one of those a bonus track).

Indeed, much of Crown of Thorns has a frantic energy to it. The raging “The Agitator” rips through its sub-two-minute run with such urgency that The Crown risks getting a speed metal tag. And, where those Amon Amarth influences remain, they are very well executed (“Churchburner”), with Lindstrand’s trademark snarling bark ensuring The Crown still sounds like … well, The Crown. Where things get a bit weird, is when the tempo comes down. Dynamics are no bad thing, of course, they give the breakneck sections more impact. However, it’s almost like the band felt that dropping the pace left some unused space they needed to find a way to fill. Their solution? Add a load of effects, echoes, and reverb onto the vocals, sometimes introducing a half-whispered delivery (“Gone to Hell” and parts of “The Night Is Now”).

In many ways, The Crown delivers exactly what you expect and want on Crown of Thorns. Churning, expertly crafted, thrashy melodeath riffs. Delivered by Marcus Sunesson and Marco Tervonen, the guitarists traffic in that unmistakably Swedish style, with a sharp, almost blackened edge to the guitar tone to give just a little extra bite. However, it’s a shame that two of the strongest songs (“Eternally Infernal” and “No Fuel for God”) were relegated to bonus tracks. By contrast, a few of the writing choices made on the album proper were slightly more questionable. The opening, bass-led groove of “Gone to Hell” could easily have come off a Warrior Soul record and, even when it kicks up a bit, it lacks bite. The same charge could be laid at the door of “The Night Is Now” and “Where Nightmares Belong.” The production is also rougher than I’d like. There is something slightly off with the top end of the guitars, which occasionally have a waspish buzz (most notable on “Howling at the Warfield”),1 while the drums often seem to get swallowed.

If you’re a fan of The Crown, there’s enough here to enjoy and remind you of what you love about them. Yet, in their heavier sound, the melodicism has been sacrificed for all-out speed, while in the slower material, they’ve resorted to unnecessary bells and whistles that give Crown of Thorns a slightly artificial feel. At its best (“I Hunt with the Devil” and “Churchburner”), Crown of Thorns is straight-up fun. But highlights aside, Crown of Thorns just feels a touch tired and The Crown feels like a band searching around for new inspiration. If you’re new to The Crown, this isn’t the place to start.

Digging back in the archive to 2019 Bristol based artist Billy Whizz spits some lyrical darts over a G00SE production. Crown Of Thorns brings a big anthemic sound and definitely has that appeal. This is the second single from Billy Whizz's EP "Always Finding Trouble".
