The boys enjoyed challenging themselves, although it took a while for them to understand they were not competing against each other, but their own personal best.

Importantly, they all “did their best”, which is really all we can ask.

Great news! The rain held off and we had our annual Cub pack walk in the park.
This is not our local; it involves a short drive but is a lovely place to visit. Large lake and plenty of “off track” woodland to discover old brick structures that tell the story of the coal mines below.
The boys love it here - especially the play area they use when the walk is over!
We also get plenty of parents and siblings coming with, along with the dogs too. A real family affair.

I have a new Cub Team Member! A new volunteer came along for the first time tonight, an existing Assistant Leader with another Section elsewhere in the UK, and they have an interest in helping us start another Section at our Group too!
They are going to fit in, we all seemed to get on well.

We had a scientific evening with the Cubs:
- Seeing how a lava lamp works
- Watching what happens with eggs in water
- Making non-Newtonian liquid and getting quite messy at the same time!
It was a lot of fun and the boys enjoyed learning the different science behind each experiment.

It’s been a productive night: first I got my new key caps installed on my keyboard and then I finished setting a @nextcloud instance & email server for my Cub Scout pack. Tomorrow I should be able to button things up on Nextcloud and start inviting users 🎉

2/2 The Cubs thought about 3 related extreme weather scenarios (heavy rain, flooding, emergency accommodation) & had to decide out of the selection of equipment (paper representations) which 3 things they would want in each scenario & at the end choose the 5 they thought suited most situations. They rotated between each rather than tackle them simultaneously as a Pack.
The activities went well but my delivery of the subject & ceremonies was sub par this week.
Yesterday our Cubs were finishing the Global Issues badge.
It is World Turtle Day tomorrow and to mark this we briefly talked about awareness days, charities & their involvement, & why it’s important.
They then made 3D paper turtles. Each of our parent helpers also made one each, the pictured one is one of them.
I’m very fortunate to have excellent parent helpers, especially as I have often had to rely on them & I’ve often been the only Leader attending recently.

A bit late to post this week’s Cubs Meeting. It was our first week devoted to the Global Issues badge.
The Cubs considered what’s recyclable and sorted where the items would go to be recycled (e.g. at home , collection point, compostable, etc). Then they looked at where in the world the belongings in their homes were made and arranged them by continent.
And unrelated games were played outside to finish the evening.

The boys had a smashing time tonight as they took on Akela’s Challenge!
Protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a height of approximately 8ft. (Probably nearer 7ft in reality!)
Out of 25 eggs, only 3 survived.
We do this a couple of times each year
The boys are given the same materials and they have to use their ingenuity to protect the egg.
It’s a lot of fun, and can be quite messy!
