#Curlew

Had lunch in town today and went for a walk along the esplanade after work. Yeppoon Lagoon (last three photos) is a free resort style water park operated by the council. The Curlews were making the most of the lack of people.

Luontopiha tarjoaa turvapaikkoja monille lintulajeille. Tässä kuovinpoikanen etsii syötävää pihaniityllä. Kuovi pesii peltoaukeilla ja tämä poikanen on selviytynyt turvaan säilörehun ensimmäisen korjuun tieltä. Heinäkuussa poikanen osaa jo lentää, joten tämän piiperon ennuste on hyvä.

Kuovin uhanalaisuusluokitus on kuitenkin silmälläpidettävä. Joutomaat ja vasta loppukesällä niitettävät niittypellot olisivat kuoville tarpeen.

Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
My heart remembers how!

Robert Louis Stevenson
To S. R. Crockett
(In Reply to a Dedication)

Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
My heart remembers how!

Gray recumbent tombs of the dead in desert places,
Standing stones on the vacant wine-red moor,
Hills of sheep, and the howes of the silent vanished races,
And winds, austere and pure:

Be it granted me to behold you again in dying,
Hills of home! and to hear again the call;
Hear about the graves of the martyrs the peewees crying,
And hear no more at all.

You see that I will have to rise
And turn round and get back where
My running age will slow for a moment
To let me on. It is a colder
Stretch of water than I remember.

The curlew’s cry travelling still
Kills me fairly…

Loch Thom
by W. S. Graham

1

Just for the sake of recovering
I walked backward from fifty-six
Quick years of age wanting to see,
And managed not to trip or stumble
To find Loch Thom and turned round
To see the stretch of my childhood
Before me. Here is the loch. The same
Long-beaked cry curls across
The heather-edges of the water held
Between the hills a boyhood’s walk
Up from Greenock. It is the morning.

And I am here with my mammy’s
Bramble jam scones in my pocket.
The Firth is miles and I have come
Back to find Loch Thom maybe
In this light does not recognise me.

This is a lonely freshwater loch.
No farms on the edge. Only
Heath grouse-moor stretching
Down to Greenock and One Hope
Street or stretching away across
Into the blue moors of Ayrshire.

2

And almost I am back again
Wading in the heather down to the edge
To sit. The minnows go by in shoals
Like iron-filings in the shallows.

My mother is dead. My father is dead
And all the trout I used to know
Leaping from their sad rings are dead.

3

I drop my crumbs into the shallow
Weed for the minnows and pinheads.
You see that I will have to rise
And turn round and get back where
My running age will slow for a moment
To let me on. It is a colder
Stretch of water than I remember.

The curlew’s cry travelling still
Kills me fairly. In front of me
The grouse flurry and settle. GOBACK
GOBACK GOBACK FAREWELL LOCH THOM.

Pair of Long-billed Curlews on native prairie in southern AB. There were at least 6 pair already staking out breeding territories. They are nice now, but once there are eggs or chicks they attack by flying at your face with their long stabby bill while screaming at you, and turning away at the last moment before your eye gets skewered (so it seems).

Long-billed Curlew In Flight

Without this lucky photo of a curlew in flight, I never would've known the beautiful pattern they have on their wing feathers.

New #review today: "Well, as chance would have it, some tapes from the mid-80s turned up in #GeorgeCartwright’s basement, an almost forgotten band he played in briefly called #Angling. Of course, Cartwright was a founding member and saxophonist of #Curlew, at that time in between their first and second albums. Angling played two live gigs and one studio recording session, and that’s it, they were done and off to other projects." #ExposeOnline #AvantJazz #AvantRock expose.org/index.php/articles/

May I introduce you to "Luke" the leucistic . This bird has over-wintered on South Walney for at least 11 years. Would really like to know where it goes off to in the breeding season. With luck someone may have pics to compare feather patterns. UK.

A Curlew walking in rough pasture, what is distinctive about this bird is its mainly white plumage with a few patches of brown and black feathers. These feather patterns make this bird easy to identify.

Our street's #curlew family are still around! Unfortunately it looks like only one of the chicks made it to adolescence. I hope they stay in the area, their haunting night screams always cheer me up.

A photo of three bush stone-curlew birds. Two adult and one adolescent, about 2/3 the size of the adults. They are standing on a green lawn. They are a dull brown/grey/black colour with long legs and necks, with black beaks.

Stone Curlew in the headlights - check out those giant eyes! 👀 caught this fella by surprise on our way home the other night, first sighting we had in our area ever! I whipped out my phone and took a couple of shots - not the greatest quality, but I’m chuffed that I managed to get a pic 🤠

A slender bird in brown and beige colors, with long legs, knobby knees, a short beak and big eyes adapted to its nocturnal lifestyle. It is caught in the headlights of a car and seems to be frozen in its stance… (and flew off a second after I took this photo)
