#CyberDeck

Then the CyberBrick, a neat Zero 2W and M5Stack Cardputer-Adv portable terminal with a custom-built metal housing...

...and that display (actually the deck itself) isn't connected to the keyboard (the Cardputer) - you can separate the two and they'll work just fine anyway.

I jailbroke my 3ds the other day because I was bored. Now I went down a rabbit hole and I want to build a cyberdeck and install linux on my laptop. This may be a problem...an expensive problem but a fun problem I think.

@cwebber Language and branding is important in conveying ideas and setting expectations for the general public. For example, Apple managed to convince people that “a Mac” was a totally different type of thing from “a PC”; if it's different, maybe it's better. And an “iPhone“ is not the same type of thing as a “computer”, so don't expect to be able to do everything a “computer” can; it's a new different thing.

So I think we need a word that means a local-first computer that you actually control. “PC” is already taken; “sickobox” is (alas) a hard sell.

I propose we use the word #cyberdeck. A *cyberdeck* means a local-first computer that you actually control. My #PinePhone with #postmarketOS is a prototype cyberdeck. @modal are trying to make a ready-for-primetime cyberdeck.

:raspberrypi: Alien Fan builds a better Raspberry Pi Cyberdeck.

It's been a while since I covered cyberdecks, and so, when this Alien-inspired cyberdeck crossed my path, I had to take a look. Powered by a Raspberry Pi, [Jeff Merrick]'s slab of 1970s/1980s aesthetic screams the "charm" of the worn and broken Alien universe that belies the powerful single-board computer within.

⁉️The Typeframe PS-85's 3D printed case instantly transports this cyberdeck into the cold and gritty Alien universe. You could easily print this yourself.⁉️

typeframe.net/docs/ps-85#/

⁉️The PS-85 is essentially a 3D printed slate with a handle, but its aesthetic is based on the Alien franchise, and there are two elements that instantly leap to our view. The keyboard and LED matrix. The keyboard is based around Simon Deering's original iconography. Duringthe production of Alien, director Ridley Scott wanted a complex-looking, but identifiable keyboard that would be on screen for mere seconds. Deering produced the icons that made the cut, and the rest is history. ⁉️

Merrick's Typeframe PS-85 keyboard is based on a 40% mechanical keyboard, specifically a Penkesu retro-style keyboard created by Penk Chen. The keys are hot swappable and look glorious; you just need to know what each key represents, as the icons provide little or no clue. But they look damn good!

<https://penkesu.computer/>

👾Overall, this cyberdeck looks great. The weathering and general paint job are superb, and it makes me want to build my own, and I can! Merrick has provided a full breakdown of materials, assembly steps, electronic circuits and the software used to turn this project into a nightmarish reality.👾[ImageSource: Jeff Merrick]

👾The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, the smallest Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer [SBC] in the range, but larger than the Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller, provides the computing power. The Pi is in the top corner and has its own standoffs to provide a secure connection point and space for the CPU to breathe. Next to the Pi is the Waveshare 7.9-inch touchscreen, but [Merrick] has chosen to use Raspberry Pi OS Lite, so that feature is moot, but the screen looks great with green text.👾

The screen and Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W are powered from a single Adafruit PowerBoost 1000C, which boosts the output of a 3.7V 6000mAh LiPo cell to 5V at 1A. [Merrick]'s assembly instructions detail the wiring and logic of the electronics.

<https://www.typeframe.net/docs/ps-85/assembly/electronics>

⁉️The battery is installed on the back panel of the slate, next to the handle. A cut-out for the PowerBoost 1000C provides a means to charge the LiPo cell. The various connections for USB, HDMI, Power, and the GPIO [General Purpose Input / Output] are broken out using a myriad of custom cables and connectors.⁉️

The LED matrix to the right of the screen represents MU/TH/UR, the computer system that keeps the starships running as the crew are in hypersleep. The original design of MU/TH/UR debuted in Alien, and it was the work of Ron Cobb.

Then the slightly-unfortunately-named "SexyberDeck", which eschews modern approaches like 3D printing and laser cutting for a truly cyberpunk build housed in the remains of an Akai MIDI keyboard.

is there any adapter or way of having a single antenna for lets say a GPS module and Lora? or is this too much of a technical feat?

This is a nice piece of tech. Almost a consumer-friendly look. maybe when the legit version comes out I'll buy. In the meantime, if anyone has a hot tip on a cyberdeck that has a microphone and speaker built-in I'd appreciate it. Thanks #Cyberdeck #GeekCulture youtube.com/watch?v=xOT5Bj9ugxw

#CyberDeck addiction is real, y'all

Left to right: #PicoCalc (ClockworkPi) running a Lua firmware, #Tanmatsu (Nicolai Electronics) running the Synthwave example app, and #HackberryPi CM5 (Zitao) running the Pico-8 retro game development app (@zep) on top of RPi OS.

To close, a work-in-progress project to create a -powered tablet which runs on AA batteries.

Yes, just like my Cambridge Computers Z88. Except the Z88 takes four batteries (and my even-more-portable HP 200LX takes two). This? This thing'll take *ten*. Possibly 15.

@b9AcE

Presumably there would be loopholes in the definition of phone that would allow for cyberdecks, no matter where they put the line we need to keep toeing it and encourage others to do the same, this will make it increasingly expensive to police that line. If and when you start getting arrested at checkpoints for unregistered devices then its underground in person rules and we need strong community dual-power structures that can work without devices long before that point

I actually think skipping to step 3 as you call it is a great idea, why give the state the impression that all they need to do is ban signal for example and the protests will stop, we should step up with our best hands first.
