Mark Knopfler is a #cyclocross fan! First thing he mentions in the Brothers in Arms retrospective interview with Dutch paper "AD", is cyclocross and how he loves watching Fem van Empel and Puck Pieterse. When Mark Knopfler, former frontman of Dire Straits, talks about the re-release of the famous album Brothers in Arms, which was released forty years ago this month, you wouldn't expect him to start talking about a Dutch cyclo-cross rider. Yet that is the first subject the 75-year-old Briton brings up during a video interview that will last for more than three quarters of an hour.
Fem van Empel, the name will not mean anything to everyone in the Netherlands. But Mark Knopfler is a fan of the 22-year-old from Brabant who became cyclo-cross world champion for the third time in February. "Here in England there are more and more cyclists, in the Netherlands that culture has existed for a long time, for such a small country you have so much talent. I like watching cyclo-cross and my favourite is Fem van Empel, she is fantastic. She has a friend who is also so good, Puck Peters (Puck Pieterse, ed.). Little girls, but strong and with enormous stamina, it is inspiring to watch them at work." The endurance of the very popular Dire Straits in the 80s proved less impressive. Knopfler himself decided to stop in 1995, after eighteen years as a composer, singer and guitarist. Hits like Money for Nothing, Walk of life, Sultans of swing and Private Investigations proved to be classics for eternity.

Les épreuves se sont déroulées sur le traditionnel Circuit Josy Mersch, situé entre Cessange et Leudelange. La compétition a été organisée par SaF Zéisseng en collaboration avec la Ville de Luxembourg, la commune de Leudelange et la Fédération du Sport Cycliste Luxembourgeois (FSCL).

Vous avez déjà entendu parler des Lyon 2025 EuroGames ?

C'est un évènement inclusif qui a lieu du 23 au 26 juillet. La course de vélo a lieu le samedi 26 juillet, mais il y a des tas de concerts, spectacles, soirées et animations sur les 3 jours de l'évènement. C'est pour ça que le prix est un peu plus élevé que le prix d'une course classique.

Durant l'évènement, il y aura également un concours de déguisement (pour celleux qui ne visent pas la perf ), on est en train de mettre en place une initiation piste sur le vélodrome avec Marie Patouillet en coach (championne paralympique de piste, si c'est pas la classe !!) des vélos spéciaux à essayer, et plein d'autres surprises !!

Picture from a cyclocross bicycle race with a few dozen racers competing in one of the mens races. This section of the race is a sand trap using a "beach volleyball" court with a tight turn. Most racers are running with their bikes through the difficult terrain, one cyclist in mid frame is riding through it.

Continuing to share favourite images from my 30+ year photographic career. Current focus is on bikes. Here, a couple of competitors in the legendary Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross race, on the summit plateau of the first peak, Ingleborough, with the second, Whernside, in the background. I liked the feeling of isolation here, but in fact there were lots of people around.
