Bob Dylan, Oh Mercy, 1989 on Columbia

Dylan’s 26th studio album, produced by Daniel Lanois and recorded in New Orleans. “Political World,” “Where Teardrops Fall,” and “Everything is Broken” make a great opening trio on side 1 – but really a great album overall.

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a Carrollton GA pressing with original inner sleeve from 1989.

Just a great song. And great sound from a man who is also responsible for Dylan’s Time out of Mind, Willie Nelson’s Teatro and Emmmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball. Among many others.

Billy Bob Thornton – “All die schönen Pferde” (2000)

(ZDFneo)

"Pride (In the Name of Love)" is a song by Irish #rock band U2. It is the second track on the band's 1984 album, #TheUnforgettableFire, and was released as its lead #single in September 1984. The song was produced by #BrianEno and #DanielLanois. Written about the American civil rights leader #MartinLutherKingJr, "#Pride" received mixed critical reviews at the time, but it was a major commercial success for U2 and has since become one of their most popular songs.

Thursday, What A Concept! | Brian Eno – Thursday Afternoon (1985, UK)

It’s been a while since our last entry in our “Thursday, What A Concept” series, so our next spotlight is on the somewhat conceptual album that is number 872 on The List, submitted by leonardo.

Thursday Afternoon is the 60-minute ambient track rearranged from the soundtrack to Thursday Afternoon, an 80-minute long video composed of ambient “video paintings” filmed on a Thursday afternoon, produced by Eno and Daniel Lanois. As the spotlight suggests, if you listen to this with your speakers turned onto their right side, you might just gain the skill of not focusing directly on the fact that it is (depending on your time zone) only Thursday afternoon.

The concept: Thursday Afternoon is the 60-minute ambient track/long-play CD rearranged from the soundtrack to Thursday Afternoon, an 80-minute long video composed of seven ambient “video paintings” that were filmed on a Thursday afternoon in 1984, produced by Eno and Daniel Lanois. The pieces in Thursday Afternoon the video were not meant to be focused on directly and, in their original media (VHS and Beta), the TV set had to be turned onto its right side to make the vertical format viewable. Similarly, the “holographic” nature of Thursday Afternoon the album does not argue for it being focused on directly either. But, perhaps, if you turn your speakers onto their right side, you may gain the skill of not focusing directly on the fact that it is, presently, only Thursday afternoon.

Thursday Afternoon – what a concept!

The cover art is a reproduction of a an abstract painting by Tom Phillips. It is primarily a random series of various shapes, some striped, in light colours, against a lined cream-coloured background. There is a purple border around the painting, with the artist's name in white font in the top center portion of the border, and the album's name in the same font in the bottom center portion.
