Donaubikeland - Rostbraten-Runde
On Saturday some colleagues from work and I made good use of the last fair weekend in the golden October and we embarked on the Rostbraten-Runde in and around the valley of the Danube river.
We took the trains to Beuron and started out in the river valley. Honestly I could have taken a photo every other 100m. It was just so magical with the rocky towers nestled in between the autumn colours of the woods next to the slow flowing river.
A short and punchy climb took us out of the valley and we visited the lady from the reception at our company, who had invited us for a Weißwurstfrühstück after learning we would pass a few 100m from where she lives.
Freshly recharged or stuffed with food and beer - however you take it, we continued on. From this point on the route mostly followed paved roads with little traffic. Nevertheless, the website with the tour description set the pavement to gravel ratio at 51:49%. In reality it was closer to 80% for the pavement. Also there was a lot of wind, mostly from the front.
We fought our way to the Castle Wildenstein, where we tried to take a shortcut following a hiking trail down into the river valley. The trail however was only rideable with serious Trial skills. Aside from an Enduro rider with a professional license, non of us had anything close those skills, so we followed the original route on the road. At least there were some tight switchbacks (for the cars).
Back at the river, we took a break at a Biergarten for coffee and cake (I know :D). And then the rest of the tour we followed the river upstream to Beuron, where we took the trains back home.

TBW N1 - The first leg of the north route of the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
A year ago today I started on the first leg of the north route of the TBW which leads from Passau to Wegscheid over 50km and 725m vertical. Officially the start of the N1 is at the Veste Oberhaus, but it didn't make sense to me to climb up 150m of elevation just to roll back down again on the same path. Besides I would tackle this bit on the last segment of the south route anyhow.
The first 20km followed the Danube river cycling path until Obernhaus and from there the route went steep. There was a really taxing bit on an old cobble stone road through the woods.
Since I started on May 1st I had to take my first detour because in some village the route was blocked by a crane erecting the Maypole. After that the path led over rolling hills, through a bit of forest (beware of Bavarian crocodiles) and along a little creek to the Lake Ranna.
After a bit of a rest at the lake I crossed over to Kappel in Austria, where I would stay the night.

If you are interested in this tour yourself check out the official website https://www.trans-bayerwald.de. You can find any and all information regarding the TBW on this website.

The image depicts a panoramic view of Linz, an Austrian city located in Upper Austria. The vantage point is high above the town and river, providing a sweeping panorama that captures both urban architecture and natural scenery.
In the foreground, there's a serene blue-green Danube River winding through the landscape. A prominent bridge connects two sections of the city across this body of water. Alongside the riverside, various buildings with distinct red roofs can be observed, likely indicative of historical structures.
The middle ground is dominated by more densely packed urban areas with an array of architectural styles ranging from neoclassical to Gothic Revival and others that reflect early 20th-century design trends in Europe. Among these are prominent public buildings such as town halls or churches that feature elaborate facades, spires, and domes.
Beyond the cityscape lies a lush green landscape with rolling hills leading up to mountains visible on the horizon under a clear sky suggesting fair weather conditions at the time of photographing this image. The presence of vegetation indicates an area rich in natural resources and scenic beauty typical for Austrian countryside surroundings during that period.

The photo's aesthetic suggests it was produced using photographic methods like color lithography, which were popular techniques for creating vividly colored postcards or prints from glass plate negatives around [...]
