Ended the week and started the first weekend of the year after a ride on which I saw my first kingfisher of the year with Tranquility an album by American jazz saxophonist Lee Konitz's Quartet recorded in 1957 and released on the Verve label
Jason Ankeny of Allmusic states "crafted with startling precision and economy, Tranquility extols the virtues of mood and shape with Talmudic zeal, towering astride thought and expression. ...Rarely is music so profoundly cerebral also so deeply heartfelt" - Wikipedia

Tubbs in N.Y. is an album by British jazz saxophonist Tubby Hayes, recorded in October 1961 and released on Fontana Records in 1962. It was the first New York studio session to arise from Hayes's debut residency at the Half Note Club, made possible through a unique exchange of Hayes and Zoot Sims by the British and American musician unions. Though a prolific composer, none of Hayes's own compositions were selected for inclusion on the album. Instead those selected were either originals composed by session contributor, Clark Terry, or interpretations of jazz standards by Sonny Rollins and George Gershwin.
Hayes considered the session to be one of his finest, owing to the strong contributions from the New York based rhythm section, which included Horace Parlan, George Duvivier, and Dave Bailey.

Lou Donaldson, Blues Walk, 1958 on Blue Note
Great late 50s Blue Note album, with Donaldson joined by Peck Morrison on bass, Ray Barretto on congas, Dave Bailey on drums, and Herman Foster on piano. Sleeve notes by Ira Gitler. (Donaldson died last month – November 2024).
I wasn’t as familiar with Donaldson as some of his better known contemporaries, but he started with Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk, and was part of Art Blakey’s Quintent on A Night At Birdland. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for his other Blue Note LPs from the 50s and 60s.
My copy from the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, via Joe’s Albums in Worcester MA.

Grant Green - Green Street
Grant Green is on so many LPs I’ve got, but I think I’ve only featured Club Mozambique, which was a relatively late recording.
So, back to near the start, April 1961, with a great bassist (Ben Tucker) and drummer (Dave Bailey), in RvG’s studio, laying down some great tracks.
He’s such a distinctive & great jazz artist…

Grant Green - "Green Street" (1961)
There's a lovely rendition of "'Round About Midnight" on this.
