This woman is problematic & likely guilty of lots, but is "Ziz" not enough of a name? She's deadnamed a lot. She's captured again, so good. Her eyes are closed & head held up: she didn't want to be photographed by cops. cbsnews.com/news/jack-lasota-z #Ziz #cult #deadnaming #appliedRationality

I'm going to keep dead naming the Gulf of Mexico.

Pink background with white test that reads, "FYI: If you immediately started calling the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" because someone told you it was it's new name, YOU ARE VERY CAPABLE OF RESPECTING TRANS PEOPLE'S NAMES AMD PRONOUNS.

Ironic that the #Trump administration is _now_ so concerned about proper names and pronouns, kicking #AP out of the #WhiteHouse for #deadnaming the #GulfofAmerica.

2025-02-12

Let me get this straight: Trump is throwing a tantrum because the press is deadnaming the Gulf?

The upside to renaming the Gulf of Mexico is that, suddenly, a lot of MAGA bigots will be very sensitive to deadnaming.

Trying to get our #NonProfit charity organization onto #FOSS #PeerTube to avoid relying on #YouTube.

Of 179 open instances, we found exactly one good match for our content. But we messed up the owner account on signup and the admins don't accommodate moderated name changes or transitioning channels to new owners so... we're stuck in commercial #Google land.

Real life people and orgs have legit name changes all the time. Why force choice between #deadnaming or losing your content?

BOOOOOO!

As a cartoon character steps on the tines of a rake on the ground, the handle whooshes upward to smack them in the head, which is labeled "GOOD INTENTIONS."

The character has a caption naming it "Public-Good Charity Trying FOSS" while the rake's handle is labeled "Helpful PeerTube Admins."

Elon findet gut, hasst es aber, wenn man es mit ihm macht. Wenn ihn also jedes "" näher zum Herzinfarkt führt, bin ich dabei.

Rainverse Wiki now has an official policy on deadnaming. This is not actually a new policy: we have written down what we were already doing. Our hope is that by writing it down, it will be easier for new contributors to follow.

TL,DR:
* Do not deadname real people.
* Fictional characters' deadnames may be used as redirects or when necessary to document the comic.
* If you aren't sure whether a use of a deadname is "necessary," discuss it first.

Changing your name in science is a disadvantage-- is being sued for not making it possible to link prior names.

Although it makes me wonder about deadnaming as a problem.

Hmm. Via @STAT and @brittanytrang newsletter this morning.

Research

What Monica from ‘Friends’ has to do with PubMed
When you search “Marsha Reyngold” on PubMed, you won't find the Memorial Sloan Kettering physician’s first-author publication from 2007, when she used her married name of Marsha Laufer. (She’s since switched back to using her current name when publishing.)

Even though she’s registered both names to her ORCID author identifier number, PubMed doesn't search by ORCID unless the searcher specifically puts it in, and only draws up results based on name. This disadvantages many people, especially women, who are more likely to change their names after marriage, the National Civil Liberties Association argues in a new lawsuit.

The NCLA is suing the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health, which runs PubMed, over this issue, pointing out that the Internet Movie Database is capable of bringing up “Friends” actress Courteney Cox’s filmography when you search “Courtney Arquette,” and the same for judges in the Westlaw database.

“Because search results in PubMed do not return Dr. Reyngold’s full scientific contribution, she is disadvantaged when applying for various scientific grants, conferences, panel presentations, and the like,” NCLA lawyers wrote.

Donna trans: nata uomo, ora è donna. Si usa il femminile.

Non è difficile, basta ricordarsi che conta l'oggi e non il passato.

Grazie e a buon rendere!
