“I heard a bird sing in the dark of December. A magical thing and sweet to remember.” ~ Oliver Herford

Berries and a few lingering leaves provided pops of color on our peaceful birding walk yesterday.

A flashback to three years ago, almost exactly to the day, when my husband and I saw our first Snow Bunting, a rare-to-our area visitor. The tiny non-breeding female stands on a flat pale gray and white rock against an intentionally blurred background of blue water. She is white below with warm brown and orange tones on the face and patterned wings, dark legs, and a golden orange bill.

A year after coming oh-so-close to finally seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow, I finally clapped eyes and bins on one. Last November one was repeatedly sighted at a nearby location so @CTGT and I headed out to find this rare-in-our-area small sparrow. After four hours with no success, I had to leave to attend a workshop. My husband and a friend stayed to continue the search and, of course, found it. One returned to our neck of the woods about two weeks ago and after three visits, I was finally rewarded with adding this skulky little creature to my lifer list.

Three-photo layout of a non-breeding Clay-colored Sparrow, a small sparrow that is pale gray and buff overall, with a clean face, gray nape, buffy rump, and long tail. In the top two photos, the bird is sitting in the middle of purple, thorny stalks, facing left. It is on the ground in a brushy area in the bottom image, facing left and away from the camera.

A Blue Jay pauses in profile between its joyfully raucous calls.

Always stunning, a blue jay perches in right profile on a bent scrag against a clear blue sky next to a y-shaped skinny bare branch. It is bright blue above and pale gray below, has a fluffy crest, dark eye, and long dark bill, a black necklace, and black and white markings on its wings and long tail.

Winged beauty. Fall birding has been made even lovelier this year with a profusion of butterflies.

Migrating warblers have been delightedly feasting on the berries adorning the lace-like blooms of our area’s Japanese angelica trees.

I love the play of early morning sunlight and shadows on this lovely Monarch butterfly as she perches on a dewy foxtail bloom.
