OH! i had no idea the pilot DID NOT involve the crew we know as the OG Star Trek. Kirk wasn’t even the captain. Spock is the only crew member that makes it into the second pilot.

Lucille Ball had to fight for a second pilot after NBC rejected the first one. apparently it was too cerebral. that’s why she had Rodenberry sex it up in the first season.

how did that woman NOT end up owning NBC is a mystery to me.

Star Trek has deeper connections to Lucille Ball than I previously knew. Marc Daniels directed 39 episodes of I Love Lucy and went on to direct 15 episodes of Star Trek. Among the episodes are “The Man Trap”, “The Naked Time”, “Space Seed”, “Mirror, Mirror”, “The Doomsday Machine”, and “Assignment: Earth”.

Daniel’s directing credits for #ILoveLucy notably include all of season 1, “The Anniversary Present”, “The Handcuffs”, “The Operetta”, and “Tennessee Ernie Visits”.

I’ve decided to finally watch all 6 (I had an incorrect memory of learning it was 11) seasons of I Love Lucy thanks to Lucille Ball’s contribution to Star Trek.

One story of Ball’s involvement (I don’t recall if Memory Alpha or Wikipedia is where I read this) supposedly had her misunderstanding the premise of the show. This story says she believe Roddenberry was making a military themed show about performing artist working for USO (United Service Organization; a non-profit heavily associated with U.S. military) and followed them as they traveled the world, going to different places that the U.S. military was stationed. This was supposedly what Lucille Ball understood the premise of Star Trek to be when she greenlit it.

Another story that is debated, is if Ball and Roddenberry ever met. Some say yes, others say no.
