GYESME: A New Design-Led Downstream Of GNOME Being Explored:
phoronix.com/news/GYESME-GNOME
(Interesting project, I like the concept to make GNOME more flexible while keeping the overall user experience. I don't really get why GNOME wants to tie itself to Systemd. Also, supporting ather design systems like the KDE/Qt ecosystem would be nice (if they mean that), I face theming issues all the time with programs written for KDE, which make some programs unusable for me, while other than the theming, they would be great for my use case. I'm curious whether this project will shape up as an actual, daily drivable desktop in the future.)
(I don't really get what they mean about "Defaults are protected more aggressively than options." though. It sounds like they want to limit customization, while in the rest of the description, they emphasize flexibility. 🤔 Or maybe I'm just interpreting it in the wrong way.)
(But other than that I like their mindset of listening to feedback, adapting direction accordingly.)

Spent the evening messing around with Alpine Linux (refresher) and Chimera Linux (all new to me) as full Plasma desktops.

Not sure which one I like better but they both kinda impress upon me that perhaps 'mainstream' Linux is headed in the wrong direction. They both feel lean, mean, and up to date compared to other 'normal' distros.

All the main productivity apps are available via flatpak so being musl based doesn't matter except for Nvidia drivers and perhaps dev work that explicitly requires GNU libs/tools.

Intrigued by the BSD userland on Chimera. Does this make Chimera a 'real UNIX'? Ha! A UNIX Kernel required technically I guess.

Chimera's repos aren't as full as Alpine's but flatpak makes it not matter. Mind you, this was before realizing there was a 'user repo' that could be configured. Similar to AUR in a way...perhaps?

Dinit is cool, seems very similar to Alpine's initrc.

Will have to do some experiments on physical hardware (zfs).

2026 won’t be “the year of the Linux desktop” but it might be the clearest turning point yet.
What’s different now:
🖥️ Wayland maturity + GNOME/KDE momentum
🎮 Proton keeps improving (anti-cheat is still the big cliff)
📦 Flatpak/Flathub making app installs way less distro-dependent
💥 Push factors: Win10 EOL + Win11 friction, Intel Macs being sunset

Year-end urge to hop distros rising. Kind of want to figure out what the buzz w is all about, but I have been really happy with so far... anybody have any useful input for desktop/gaming use?

@jameshjacks0njr @itsfoss Similar story here. #Microsoft shoving #EdgeBrowser is what made finally go all in on #desktopLinux after flirting with it for a decade.

I have worked with #Linux for around 25 years, but 98% of that experience has been on servers via SSH.

Almost all of my professional work has been done on #Windows. I am embarrassed by how little I know about #DesktopLinux.

Between work and #Gaming I have been dependent on Windows for my entire computing life. Thanks to leaving #corporate #InformationTechnology #IT behind, and discovering the immense progress made with Linux distros like #Nobara, I am now playing #simsettlements2 on Linux.
