#Hydropower Developer No-Show Leaves #Navajos with More Questions than Answers

Chapter officials table hydropower resolution, ask for more community info sessions as FERC seeks to end a policy blocking permits on Tribal land absent Tribal support

by #HerbYazzie, Coal-Lease Area Resident; #AdrianHerder, #TóNizhóníÁní; #TaylorMcKinnon, #CenterForBiologicalDiversity
via #CensoredNews, Nov. 21, 2025

Excerpts: #KayentaAZ— "On a cloudy, rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Kayenta Chapter held its monthly meeting where a resolution by #NatureAndPeopleFirst was first on the agenda. Impacted community members from the coal-lease area on Black Mesa (#DziłYíjiin) filled the chapter house to voice concern about the resolution. But before discussions could begin, Chapter officials tabled the resolution because the developers didn’t show up.

"Nature and People First (#NPF) are developers who are pushing #PumpedStorageHydropower (#PSH) on the #NavajoNation, particularly in the #BlackMesa region. Pumped storage pumps water uphill during low electricity prices and then releases it back downhill through generators when electricity prices are high, producing electricity and revenue. Pumped storage #hydropower, which requires huge amounts of water, is different than hydrogen, which other developers wanted piped across the Nation."

[...]

"#TóNizhóníÁní (#TNA) e-filed comments objecting to #FERC’s proposed policy reversal along with the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, #AmericanRivers and more than a dozen #tribes across the US. 'For decades, #CoalMining on #BlackMesa has not only extracted coal but also billions of gallons of #groundwater to support the #mining operation,' wrote #AdrianHerder with Tó Nizhóní Ání. 'Energy projects that propose to use large amounts of water for #EnergyProduction should be vetted diligently.' Water access and reliability is crucial for our communities on Black Mesa and the southwest region of the United States.

"Tribal communities understand the resources and impacts by industry. Any project that proposes to use groundwater when it has been heavily impacted and in a state of recovery should not be considered for continued industry use."

2025 #UraniumFilmFestival - #UnderTheCloud

USA/Mexico, 2023, Director Pedro Reyes Alvarez, Documentary, 24 min.

"The film examines the ongoing legacy of nuclear violence in the American Southwest, where uranium extraction and nuclear testing have left deep scars on both the land and its people. Featuring voices like #LeonaMorgan, a #Diné #AntiNuclear activist, the film reminds us that nuclear energy and nuclear weapons are inseparable—a fact that remains dangerously overlooked. Alongside her, other community members speak about the destruction of their environment, the health crises that continue to afflict their people, and their resistance to the mining of sacred lands. Under the Cloud is a short documentary that examines the ongoing legacy of nuclear violence in the American Southwest, where uranium extraction and nuclear testing have left deep scars on both the land and its people."

2025 #UraniumFilmFestival - #TheRiverThatHarms

1987, Directed by Colleen Keane, Documentary, 45 min.

"This illuminating film documents the largest radioactive waste spill in U.S. history - a national tragedy that received little attention. With the sound of a thunderclap, 94 million gallons of water contaminated with #UraniumMining waste broke through a #UnitedNuclearCorporation storage dam in 1979. The water poured into the #PuercoRiver in #NewMexico - the main water supply for the #Navajo that live along the river, and a tributary of the major source of water for #LosAngeles. Navajo ranchers, their children, and farm animals waded through the river unaware of the danger."

This is a bad sign. Red auroras are warnings in the Navajo-Diné culture. They represent a war or a calamity. The mountain on bottom is a silhouette of sisnaajinį́', the sacred mountain to the East. This is not good, at all.

WTF! #Navajo Reporter #MarleyShebala Violently Arrested by #NavajoPolice, After Filing Ethics Complaint on Navajo President #BuuNygren

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, October 16, 2025

WINDOW ROCK, Navajo Nation -- "Navajo Police were sent today to evict Marley Shebala, Dine' Zuni Pueblo reporter, from her home. Marley, 73, screamed in pain as she was arrested by police. Marley
had filed an ethics complaint against Navajo President Buu Nygren, and was reporting on the ongoing #corruption in the Navajo tribal government.

" 'I am 73 years old, and they have me handcuffed in my home with my daughter, our Navajo police, to
serve and protect' Marley says, as she continues to livestream. Navajo police used a locksmith to enter her home, before the violent arrest."

K'É Infoshop: #Dine' #Palestinian Liberation Rally

#Palestinians and Dine' are Bound in a Common Struggle

Article by #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, August 3, 2025

WINDOW ROCK, #NavajoNation -- " 'We share this common struggle with Palestine!' a Dine' voice rang out during today's K'É Infoshop: Dine' Palestinian Liberation Rally.

"'Are our children not sacred anymore?'

" 'Free! Free! Palestine!' sounds out the voices of Dine' now in solidarity with Palestine. 'Children are being bombed.' Dine' voices called out, speaking out for Dine' children and the future. They pointed out the U.S. government's livestock reduction on the Navajo Nation, and the seizure of Navajo resources.

" 'Think about these women and children, think about what they did to us,' a Dine' voice rang out in the Navajo Nation capitol of #WindowRock. Speaking out for love and freedom, she said despite the injustices there is hope.

" 'We were taught to think strong,' she said, raising her voice for the children in Palestine being bombed and poisoned, children without water, children without mothers and fathers. Members of the community are gathered in solidarity with Gaza at the corner of Indian Rt 12 and Hwy 264 in Window Rock today, on August 3, and will gather again on August 10, at 11 a.m.

"K'É Infoshop said, 'Every rally and protest that we organize is intended to help people forge new connections and bond over shared values. In coming together, we demonstrate to the wider public
that there are many among us who want to remain #Diné by continuing to #resist #USImperialism until we are truly free. Outraged by the genocide in #Gaza? Then show up and make your voice heard."
