Some people in the disability community will promote awareness & advocacy for X disability and then say they’re “not political” They don’t realize by simply identifying as having X disability, their existence is “political” #DisabilityCommunity #DisabledCommunity

One of the biggest issues with fellow #autistic folks is not wanting to identify as #disabled. I can understand & respect that personal choice. I have both physical & invisible #disabilities so don't really have that personal choice. What I've learned from a lifetime of living as an openly disabled person is some folks not wanting to identify as disabled but wanting to access disability support systems. It doesn't work like that. If you don't identify as disabled - you won't get any disabilities coverage, no disability benefits & won't qualify for any disability accommodations in any workplaces.

What exactly are some fellow autistics scared of, with identifying as a disabled person? Because some of the reasons I've read online sound ableist & not accepting of folks with disabilities. Some of the reasons I hear are very hurtful towards #DisabledCommunity. Is it just ego & self protection or is it something else? I don't get it as I don't have the privilege to choose to opt out of disability identity - it's part of who I am, whether I like it or not.

The #diversity of #disabilities means #accessibility needs can be both wide-ranging within the community and specific to an individual. But in general, “there are very, very few venues where the stage itself is accessible. There’s a slightly larger number, but still plenty of places #inaccessible for an audience member to watch the show,” says Dan Hurwitz, co-founder of the Seattle-based comedian collective #TheDisabledList and a stand-up missing digits from his hands and feet.

#Comedians say their medium inherently requires flexibility and improvisation, but what’s being asked of them is #inequitable, may be illegal under #TitleIII of the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct, and can have long-lasting impacts on their careers. “A comedy stage is the entry point to these other opportunities that will help to develop your art,” notes Nina G., author of “Stutterer Interrupted” and a member of the Bay Area troupe #ComediansWithDisabilities Act. “If you’re not able to develop your art, how are you going to get those acting gigs? How are you going to write that sitcom? How are you going to get a special?”

According to Snipe, acts can face “the fire and the gauntlet” of navigating inaccessible public transit or expensive and unreliable rideshares even before they arrive. Once at the venue, ASL interpreters, audio description, ramps or accessible bathrooms are few and far between, whether in L.A., New York, or outside these coastal entertainment bubbles.

A customer in the parking lot even came to help. Opened the door and took a few boxes off.

When we got on the door, other clerks were all, "There are carts there" thinking they were being helpful.

... Still livid and I felt bad for the kid who offered to come out and help me...and if you know me, I HATE when people call young people "kids"... but he was that young. Helpful but quiet and I don't think he was sure I wouldn't lose my shit. I thanked him profusely. He doesn't make these asinine decisions after all.

At my car he stacked boxes up LITERALLY to his eyeballs. And I had as many as I could carry. Dropped some...

You can't even use the cart to take your huge bag of clothes... A few pair of shoes... A KITCHEN AID to your car.

Ok. So.

I walked into Kohl's to get a cart to bring to my car to put some returns into. It was a lot of boxes. Amazon returns.

I get close to the door and

*ERRRRK!*

The cart locks up. I'm looking to see what I ran over that is jammed in the wheel but I don't see anything.

A clerk, who has a line of customers is yelling at me from way over there 👉 that you can't take cars out of the store anymore.

#Reminder that many #PhysicallyDisabled people would love to easily ride a #bicycle but it's not possible anymore for many of us & #adaptive bicycles are usually too #expensive for most #DisabledFolks - who live on #FixedIncomes - to be able to afford. Would love for nondisabled folks to not forget about huge #disabled population that cannot ride bicycles everywhere - especially when we can't even afford to buy adaptive or electric bicycles.
