I'm not much of a gamer. Like, I don't play any games other than Wordle. But I am a fan of #CriticalRole and I found myself getting videos from the game #Dispatch suggested to me on YouTube because they do voice acting work for the game. I started watching some clips, and I was completely hooked. I still have no desire to play the game, but the story is absolutely amazing.
It's honestly more like a choose your own story TV show like one of the ones that were on Netflix in the last few years. The voice acting cast is absolutely stellar, and the music is doing exactly what it is supposed to do -- conveying the stakes of the scenes and the emotional states of the characters. If this *were* a show, it would be at least as good as anything that's on TV right now. It's got laugh-out-loud comedy moments, action, and scenes that really hit you in the feels like a punch in the gut. I'd probably rank it above Invincible as far as superhero shows go. It's certainly not formulaic.
And it's not just about superheroes -- in fact, your playable character loses what makes him super in the opening sequences of the game. It's about why some people are villans and why some choose to help. It's about redemption and how it might only be possible if you believe you're worthy of it.
Oh, and it's definitely earned its "mature audience" rating.
I'll leave you with a question that you'll be asking yourself at some point during a playthrough (or a watch, as it was in my case).
