Contrary to popular opinion Universities aren’t yet equitable ‘woke’ organisations we are actually well off the pace and have a lot of ground to make up especially on race equity (but also gender, disability etc.). And before you right wingers come at me it is our legal duty to do this work under the Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty…

I spent 26 hours in the hands of UK Council for Graduate Education at their annual Doctoral Deans and Directors residential on Thursday and Friday.

We listened to experts and talked through approaches to everything from quality assurance to harassment and sexual misconduct (and I volunteered to help at a session for colleagues new to the network/role).

Made a lot of friends and learnt so much.

I couldn’t agree more on the topic of mandatory training for supervisors (and not because we’ve had that here for as long as I remember): it provides a basic level of assurance and support to new supervisors of our postgraduate researchers.

I’m seeking recommendations for PhD programs. My masters level graduate work is focused on #posthumanism, and I have extensive experience in #CommunityDevelopment. For my doctoral research I’d like to merge the two fields to re-imagine how we do and be #community in the #Anthropocene. I’m looking for a program that is pretty self-directed and ideally offers opportunities for independent studies. I’m just starting this search process from scratch.

Yesterday I closed a fantastic alumni event for Postgraduate Researchers in our Faculty of Environment. Lots of common themes and connections (and a keynote from Director of the British Antarctic Survey) but my takeaway is that you won’t realise how transformative a PhD is until you work in a sector which doesn’t directly call on the topic of your thesis. Today has been a bit of a car crash due to lack of sleep but I got to watch myself on video presenting some digital learning materials (finally) and received not one but two thank you emails from freshly minted PhD graduates for the work our Doctoral College has done to provide a bit of additional financial support/foster a sense of community. Many of our postgraduate researchers are a long way from home and need more help than I can leverage and my colleagues can deliver, but we’ve done what we can. It’s been a tough few years but we aren’t giving up the fight. #phd #PostgraduateResearch #DoctoralEducation
