When's the nice cycle lane beside Bushy Park going to connect with the Dodder Greenway bit starting at Butterfield Avenue? It's a bit scary navigating the part between them @ccferrie @smytho

@ccferrie One of the things I love about cycling along the greenway, and along the parts that are not yet greenway, is the sound of water and sight of herons and egrets, the beauty that appears when there are no cars in sight or sound #DodderGreenway #CouncillorsAndGolfers #WhichSideAreYouOnBoy

This is the route proposed - the Golf Club isn't delighted by the idea but it really doesn't impact on their use of the practice green in any way.

What it does do is avoid the steep incline up to Dartry, making the greenway more accessible and inclusive, while also minimising the impact on the riparian ecosystem along the Dodder.

Last Thursday, the Irish Times published an article painting a picture of local division around proposed plans for the Dodder Greenway through Milltown.

it was a complete fabrication.

Kevin Dennehy, chair of the Dodder Action group sets the record straight on today's letters page. The proposed route, skirting the perimeter of Milltown Golf Club practice putting green is supported by walkers, cyclers, anglers and environmentalists.

Sir, – Further to your article “Finding a greenway through Dublin’s southside” on proposals to link the Dodder linear parks of Milltown and Dartry, the route proposed by Eamon Ryan at a recent meeting outlined two main alternative routes. One, currently favoured by Dublin City Council planners, would run over the Packhorse Bridge, onto Milltown Road and down the hill to Dartry Park; the other, through the practice green of Milltown Golf Club and across the existing bridge at the old dyeworks, would be much less precipitous and therefore more navigable for our less able-bodied citizens.

This is the route which the community volunteer group Dodder Action identified as the best at least six years ago.

Contrary to your report, there are no plans to restrict either pedestrians or cyclists to one or the other side of the river; rather there are plans that cyclists would be more facilitated on one side, not the other, between Classon’s Bridge and Clonskeagh Bridge.

That there is a plan for a Dodder Greenway is hardly news. The stretch in south Co Dublin has largely been built, while the Donnybrook to Ballsbridge route is under construction. Connecting the Milltown riverside walk and Dodder Park at Dartry at the “pinch point” above the Dropping Well, where currently pedestrians and cyclists have to leave the riverside, mount a steep hill and descend another, has the support of most river users. The route is still up for constructive rather than “heated” discussion. – Yours, etc,

Completely without irony, a comment on the #DodderGreenway “I think what really should be sought for is a sort of a balance between the interests of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.” 😂

It was really encouraging to see the groundswell of support for Eamon Ryan's vision for the Dodder Greenway between Donnybrook and Milltown last night. It was very positively received by residents, anglers, cyclists and the Dodder Action Group and was backed by Labour's Cllr Dermot Lacey and Ivana Bačik.

The proposal will require the 'taking in charge' of a 4m strip alongside Milltown Golf Club's putting green, which would have minimal impact on the operation of the club.
