All films age, and few survive a reviewing ten, twenty or thirty years later. But some do, and some benefit from the distance. This fine film is one of them.
The Railway Station Man, 1992, currently on BBC iPlayer. Director Michael Whyte. Apparently not very enthusiastically received at the time.
A quietly assured film, on Irish / Northern Irish politics, on family, love, loss, ageing, and grief. Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland are without flaw, as are John Lynch and Frank McCusker. The plot takes us quietly and irresistably to a powerful conclusion.
1992 was well before the Good Friday Agreement. We feel the pain that cut through all of Ireland at that time.
Donald Sutherland really is among the best. He never put a foot wrong. We miss him.
Watch it if you can.
