@claytoncubitt Of course, per Dorothy Sayers, in her novel Strong Poison, repeated small doses of arsenic over time can immunize one against a larger lethal dose. Just finished reading Murder Must Advertise by Dorothy L. Sayers. It’s absolutely savage about #capitalism, advertising & living paycheck to paycheck and was published in goddamn 1933. Ouch

If this hells-dance of spending and saving were to stop for a moment, what would happen? If all the advertising in the world were to shut down tomorrow, would people still go on buying more soap, eating more apples, giving their children more vitamins, roughage, milk, olive oil, scooters and laxatives, learning more languages by gramophone, hearing more virtuosos by radio, re-decorating their houses, refreshing themselves with more non-alcoholic thirst-quenchers, cooking more new, appetising dishes, affording themselves that little extra touch which means so much? Or would the whole desperate whirligig slow down, and the exhausted public relapse upon plain grub and elbow-grease? He did not know. Like all rich men, he had never before paid any attention to advertisements. He had never realised the enormous commercial importance of the comparatively poor. Not on the wealthy, who buy only what they want when they want it, was the vast superstructure of in- dustry founded and built up, but on those who, aching for a luxury beyond their reach and for a leisure for ever denied them, could be bullied or wheedled into spending their few hardly won shillings on whatever might give them, if only for a moment, a leisured and luxurious illusion.

They don't pay any too well at Pym's, and there are heaps of fellows who want to get out and find something better, but they daren't. Pym's is Pym's is safe - they're kind and decent, and they don't sack you if they can help it - but you live up to your income and you simply daren't cut loose. The competition is so keen, and you marry and start paying for your house and furniture, and you must keep up the instalments, and you can't collect the capital to sit round for a month or two while you look for a new job. You've got to keep going, and it breaks your heart and takes all the stuffing out of you. So I went on.

#DorothySayers I recently misremembered Five Red Herrings as 6 Red Herrings, because I couldn't remember how many red herrings there were.

I have always felt that this book was written by Sayers to prove she could, but readers with nothing to prove are allowed to skip it. I do not have a grudge against it, but found it very difficult. However, are there Five Red Herrings stans? I would like to meet them!

@PariMoonForest I hope you enjoy it! Another favourite on my #ChristmasBooks list is “Nine Tailors” by #DorothySayers, a golden age #mystery novel set around a church at Christmas. It’s full of #BellRinging and is very clearly an inspiration for the bell ringers in Doomsday Book. The book has nice comfortable pacing, good characters and lots of nerdery about fen drainage, too.
