This is a downy woodpecker, Dryobates pubescens. I captured this image a couple of years ago and was thrilled when the bird ventured closer than they usually do in this area.

When I wake up in the mornings, I always pull back my curtains a bit for a live weather check. If there's activity at the bird feeder outside my window, then even better. Today I watched a downy woodpecker having breakfast. Not the one captured in the photo, but it felt like this sweet little bird would be a good subject for today's #WildlifeWednesday.

Among the Branches

I caught sight of a downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) perched high in a distant forest tree. These woodpeckers are somewhat elusive in this area, though I do occasionally get a close look at one in my backyard—although not recently.
