Contrary to popular belief, the potion in the original novel did not split Dr. Jekyll into his good and evil halves, but simply created a more evil persona. Initially, Dr. Jekyll really enjoyed Mr. Hyde's depravity because he knew he wouldn't get blamed for it.

In the original novel of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Dr. Jekyll is an elderly man who has lived a long yet repressed life while Mr. Hyde is much younger, a part of Jekyll's psyche that has been rarely indulged. Later movies adaptations often reverse this to make Jekyll a romantic lead.
