And so it begins...

"Driverless trucks are officially running their first regular long-haul routes, making roundtrips between Dallas and Houston.

On Thursday, autonomous trucking firm Aurora announced it launched commercial service in Texas under its first customers, Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines, which delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight. Both companies conducted test runs with Aurora, including safety drivers to monitor the self-driving technology dubbed “Aurora Driver.” Aurora’s new commercial service will no longer have safety drivers."

Companies making driverless cars and trucks are going through a lot of trouble to recreate a worse version of trains to make up for a lacklustre public transportation system.

High speed rail can go above 200 kph (120 mph) without needing to slow down until their stop. Cargo trains can hold more than 4 trucks worth of freight in one car. A well maintained system has very few crashes and can move people and goods far more efficiently than cars and trucks.

However, instead of investing in already proven infrastructure, companies are using investor money to force individualised train cars to be a thing. But instead of moving a massive amount of people around, they mostly just sit in car parks.

If you want to not have to drive a car in a city, that's what busses and trams are for. If you want to not have to drive a car between cities that's what trains are for. Why do we need new technology for transportation when the old technology serves us well?
