I tweaked some sounds and I spent some time tinkering with the #STM32-based #MIDI controlled dual #ARMSID I built. This evening, I quickly put together a small DAW-less session, based on a loop pedal using the #Arturia #Drumbrute Impact drum machine and the #SID sounds with some classic arpeggios. Let me show you my current set-up: two #Moog #Mother32, one #DFAM and a #Subharmonicon, a #Labyrinth, an #Arturia #Drumbrute to make the music. A
#Behringer 12 channel mixer two mix it al together and send the different synths to my effects. An #Eventide #Space and a #Timefactor. With this setup I record all my tracks live to one stereo track.

I got an Arturia #Drumbrute and a #Roland TR-8 with the 7x7 addon. Now I need some vacation time to make stuff! 😆

I nearly bought one of these Drumbrutes. It was either this or the TR-6S and I went with the TR-6S and I think I made the right choice really.

EDIT: Oh wait, no, it was the Drumbrute Impact I was looking at, not this one. 😆

However, the first fix did result in a much better sound than what I had come to believe was how the #DrumBrute was supposed to sound. I think there may be many with the original sound chip defect still in circulation, and that those have been used in videos that purport to demonstrate that the DrumBrute sounds like crap. If you have an original release DrumBrute, it's worth checking for this.

The #DrumBrute I sold and then took it upon me to handle a defect that I was previously unaware of has just returned from repairs in France for the second time, and the thing that broke after the first defect was fixed, is now fixed, but a new thing broke. I'm getting a bit fed up and am thinking of refunding the buyer so I can maybe take it to an independent repair place to fix, while I still have the funds to do so.

Hitting a snag with the sale of my surplus synths: a DrumBrute that was already sold turned out to be affected by a hardware problem that I was unaware of causing one of the sound chips to deteriorate. The buyer sent a polite complaint and now I have to organize an RMA for a device I've already sold. It's a hassle and it's going to cut into my earnings from the sale.
But man, half the problems people have with the #DrumBrute may be attributable to that one hardware failure.

I tried to save to a different song in a different bank (C3). That sort of worked, but now I'm finding that the buttons for the patterns stop lighting up after a limited number of bars, and the recording stops. So basically, I can record a count-in and a single verse and that's it. Previously, I was able to record the full song (5 patterns, with repeats for a total of 120 measures). This to me is even weirder, because it used to work.

Well. The drum patterns are all there, the song is not. Frustratingly, while I have a chart ready to rebuild the song, the #Drumbrute refuses to save it. I am literally doing it with the manual right in front of me, and no matter what I do, after I try to hit Save + Song button, it does not save the song, and when I try to play back, it plays a different song from a different bank instead. I cannot erase that other song either.

I need to #Askfedi. How can I make the Arturia DrumBrute save?

It turns out that yes, adding a cab simulator does improve the sound of a #Drumbrute (original version) and for some of the drums, adding overdrive works as well. However, toms and congas are made worse by distortion, so I will need to separate those and find a way to only add a cab simulator to those. I guess I can do that in the DAW, after the fact, or I can dig up the CabZeus unit.
But not tonight, because I'm on emergency dog minding duty, downstairs with only an acoustic guitar.

And it's not like I'm not already doing that with sung vocals. I do think I need to spend a bit of time in the next month to work on my drum machine use, because as handy as the PO-12 was during regular #FAWM, I expect I will get bored with it during 50/90.
I expect the same effects chain I've been using on the #MicroFreak will also be useful in making a #DrumBrute sound good. Since that machine is fun to program, I should try that tonight.

I may have some #Volca synthesizers and an Arturia #Drumbrute to sell or give away soon. Not sure what I'm going to do and which devices but I think if someone's local to me and has an actual use case (as in they need the exact thing for something they're already working on), I'd be more inclined to give away.

This is fallout from my early-pandemic buying habits getting out of control. All devices involved had owners before me.
