Got the kids their British passports. Process was super simple, and they were both approved really fast. Passports were printed in a few days after approval and then sent here using DHL in a couple of days.

Next up in the Spanish citizenship saga -- registering our marriage. It's funny, you don't really think about how and why this bureaucratic stuff happens when it just happens “automatically” over the course of your life. But when you have to go step by step like this in quick succession, you realize how all of this documentation and 'proof of life' builds up and is fundamental to how our (western) societies operate and organize.
I'm not sure if it's unique, but Spain has an official document called a "Family Book”. You get one automatically when you marry. It records the marriage (along with a marriage certificate)I subsequent children (own or adopted) and other things. I see it as akin to a kind of “birth certificate” for a family unit. I think in the past Spanish people really only had the Family Book as the births and marriages were recorded in the local churches and government offices.
Since our son is still a minor, we need a Family Book to register him as a resident in Canada and thus allow him to get a Spanish passport. So I'm accumulating the documents to register our marriage… it will take 4-6mo after application to get the documents.

The Spanish 🇪🇸 Citizenship journey/saga continues. I got a reply back from the Consulate this morning to my inquiry that I sent (unintentionally) on a National Holiday last Thursday. So definite points for them. 😅
However, the bureaucracy strikes again. The kids need to register as a resident first before they can obtain a passport. (I'm 99% sure I registered as a resident *after* I received my passport last year, but… I know some legislation has changed recently, maybe it changed this?🤷♂️!)
So... another form to fill out, at least this one can be mailed to the Consulate, they'll confirm their registration by email and THEN we'll get an appointment to apply for a passport.
Other deadlines are approaching next year that is giving this some urgency, so we plow ahead!

Sent an email off to the Spanish Consulate in Toronto to try to make an appointment for a passport for the kids. As of next month it will have been 2 years since I started this journey. In that time one of the most critical things I have learned is that to get a prompt reply from the Consulate, it's best to email around 9AM Eastern time on a Thursday. 😂 😂 🇪🇸

It's official! We just received (digitally signed PDFs!) the kids Spanish birth certificates confirming they are now Spanish citizens as of July 28! 🇪🇸 🇪🇸 Interestingly, the doc wasn't signed by the Consul in Toronto but by a staff person. A change in Toronto or the Spanish Embassy perhaps? While according to Spain the three of us have "renounced" our Canadian citizenship, according to Canada, we remain firmly Canadian and are defacto #DualCitizen

I had already downloaded and printed them from the website and sent in my package last Saturday so no need to keep this, but I think I will keep them as a momento of voting for the first time as a Spanish citizen!
