#Duterte

Everyone, Filipinos and foreigners, know that the Dutertes are pro-China. It's only the DDS (Diehard Duterte Supporters) that are in denial.

In the PH, former senator Leila De Lima to sue former Vitaliano Aguirre II and others for wrongful persecution.

"From 2017, De Lima was detained for over 2,400 days at Camp Crame due to cases filed by the Duterte administration, seen by critics as retaliation for leading the Senate investigation on the regime’s bloody drug war." She has since been acquitted of all charges after witnesses recanted.

Today in Labor History June 1, 1981: Two Filipino longshore labor organizers, Domingo & Viernes, were assassinated in Seattle, Washington on orders of U.S.-backed dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In 1986, as a result of ongoing protests, President Ronald Reagan told Marcos to “cut and cut cleanly.” That evening, Marcos and his wife Imelda fled to Hawaii aboard a U.S. air force plane, after 20 years of rule, with an entourage of 90 people (mostly servants), with 22 crates of cash valued at $717 million, 300 crates of jewelry of unknown value, $4 million worth of unset precious gems, $200,000 in gold bullion, $1 million in Philippine pesos and deposit slips for $124 million in banks in the Cayman Islands. Plus, countless crates of shoes. The Marcos hold the Guinness record for the largest ever theft from a government. Today, their son, Bong Bong Marcos, rules over the Philippines, with Sara Duterte as his vice-president, daughter of the brutal previous president, Rodrigo Duterte, who has been linked to the death-squad murders of over 1,400 alleged drug dealers and street children.

Trump Follows the Book Authoritarianism and Threats to Judges

Bonica goes on to illustrate how this pattern of authoritarian attacks on the judiciary looks the same across nations. In 2009, following a ruling that he was not immune from prosecution for fraud, tax evasion, and bribery, Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi railed about “"communist prosecutors and communist judges.” In 2016, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Tiirkiye rejected the authority of his country’s highest court and purged more than 4,000 judges. Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe pushed judges to stop protests, and the judiciary collapsed. In the Philippines in 2018, Rodrigo Duterte called the chief justice defending judicial independence an “enemy,” and she was removed. In Brazil in 2021, Jair Bolsonaro threatened violence against the judges who were investigating him for corruption.

But, Bonica notes, something different happened in Israel in 2023. When Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition tried to destroy judicial independence, people from all parts of society took to the streets. A broad, nonpartisan group came together to defend democracy and resist authoritarianism.

“Every authoritarian who successfully destroyed judicial independence did so because civil society failed to unite in time,” Bonica writes. “The key difference? Whether people mobilized.”

@rssphilstarglobal this is infuriating that under government officials get to profit from Marcos failed/sloweddown drought protection (irrigation systems ) making (illegal) rice smuggling more profitable without getting punished.

Marcos gang behaves as Mafia like as under whom drug and gambling groups of officials became a monopoly
