After a gap of 28 years and a lot of persuasion / engagement from my two daughters, I finally agreed to have my second tattoo applied to my forearm this afternoon. After a lot of deliberation I decided on an excellent mantra for a man in his 60s in the wise words of #dylanthomas #tattoo
Dylan Thomas Exhibition in running for national award
Operated by Swansea Council, the Love the Words Exhibition and its accompanying engagement programme offer an immersive introduction to the life and work of Dylan Thomas, one of the 20th century’s most iconic literary figures and a proud native of Swansea.
This recognition celebrates the exhibition team’s dedication to creating welcoming, engaging, and educational experiences that resonate with children and families.
Councillor Elliot King, Cabinet for Culture, Human Rights & Equalities at Swansea Council welcomed the nomination, stating: “This honour reflects our commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and inspiring environment where young people can explore Dylan Thomas’s enduring legacy. His imaginative use of language continues to captivate and inspire, and we are proud to share that with new generations.”
The exhibition features interactive displays, multimedia installations, and a specially designed children’s trail. Authentic artefacts and a diverse programme of events provide a comprehensive and accessible exploration of Thomas’ literary contributions, his deep ties to Swansea, and his global influence.
The Kids in Museums shortlisting panel praised the centre’s inclusive approach and its strong community partnerships, particularly in supporting families during the cost-of-living crisis. Feedback from visiting families highlighted the centre’s welcoming atmosphere and the thoughtful design of its activities.
Young visitors have also shared their enthusiasm.
‘This is the best place ever!’ – Elijah, age 6
“I really enjoyed the Quiet Paper Making Workshop. I made 4 sheets with nature poetry and seeds on it. We also enjoyed looking around the exhibition. The staff were very friendly and made me feel comfortable” Annie, age 10
The Kids in Museums Awards are organised by the national charity of the same name, which champions family-friendly museum experiences across the UK. Winners will be announced in October 2025.

"On Cader Peak there was a school for witches where the doctor's daughter, teaching the unholy cradle and the devil's pin, had seven country girls. On Cader Peak, half ruined in an enemy weather, the house with a story held the seven girls, the cellar echoing, and a cross reversed above the entrance to the inner rooms."

Yesterday I visited Dylan Thomas' boathouse and writing shed in #Laugharne for the first time. It's a ditty little museum but very charming! Plus it was a VERY beautiful day for it.
I'll freely admit I knew very little about Dylan Thomas before visiting, and now I know a smidge more (including what he sounded like). Winning, right?
An excellent @thecwordpodcast excursion all in all!

"My birthday began with the water birds
And the birds of the winged trees flying my name
Above the farms and the white horses.
And I rose in rainy autumn,
And walked abroad in a shower of all my days."

Dylan Thomas Boathouse Triumphs in ‘Win an Architect’ Initiative
The initiative seeks out the most innovative client briefs and architectural proposals that enhance, showcase, and celebrate culture outside London. A design concept worth up to £12,000, devised by Wignall & Moore’s award-winning RIBA Chartered architects, is the grand prize for the lucky winner.
The Boathouse, perched on a cliff overlooking the Taf estuary, was the residence of renowned Welsh poet Dylan Thomas during the final four years of his life. It is here that he penned some of his most significant works, including parts of “Under Milk Wood.” Today, the Boathouse is a member of CofGâr, the Carmarthenshire County Council museums and arts service, attracting visitors from around the world.
The design concept prize aims to make the Boathouse more accessible and enhance visitor experience by reimagining its entrance, expanding indoor space, and utilising the old Harbour’s potential.
Councillor Hazel Evans, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport, and Tourism, expressed her enthusiasm:
“Securing the ‘Win an Architect’ prize is a great achievement for the Dylan Thomas Boathouse and CofGâr. This support will help us improve the visitor experience while preserving the Boathouse’s unique character.”
The partnership with Wignall & Moore will extend through 2025, focusing on sustainable enhancements that respect the historical importance of the Boathouse and preserve its legacy for future generations.
A free creative writing workshop with award-winning poet and playwright Menna Elfyn was held on 25 January, kicking off a yearlong series of events and workshops which will be held at the Boathouse. Share your ideas and help shape the future of this unique space. Secure your spot in advance on the CofGâr website.
She was what now? 👀

Dylan Thomas's words, though about individual death, seem applicable to our nation right now. His admonition to rage (and protest and sue and fight with all of our might) against what we is happening also seems right.
"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
