🔓 The development of #OpenScience raises difficult questions about its implications for #equity and #inclusion.

🆕 In a new blog post, Louise Bezuidenhout, Paola Castaño, @sabinaleonelli, @anaparroncab and @ismaelrafols report on the insights gained from four sessions at the #easst4s2024 conference in July 2024 on monitoring equitable Open Science. 👉 leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/int

A gift at the end of a very long day. Here it is, in all its glory: the open access version of my book on network cultures is now available thanks to MIT Press.

As summer break nears, there won't be a new blog post for Matter of Imagination this month. However, Anya and I shared our thoughts on #EASST4S2024 in our latest newsletter. Check it out here (and consider subscribing)! mailchi.mp/3f1fff06033a/sociot

Many thanks again to Apolline Taillandier, @sjvanders and Neil Stephens for organizing a panel on #philanthropy #technoscience and #transformation in Amsterdam: #easst4s2024

The topics may not seem to be intended for each other, but they fit together really well, as the discussions showed!

It was interesting to hang out at @easst last week and learn from folks in the #STS space. The kids loved the vouchers too (their own money).

I presented some results from our work on people interacting with LLMs. Besides Welby and Suchman, which I shared before, the interactions made me think of Garfinkel's Studies in Ethnomethodology, and especially his random-yes-no-answers experiment

We're uncannily good at finding sense in nonsense, and instruction-tuning boosts it

#easst4s2024 #EASST4S

Two kids sitting in the shade of a banner of the EASST4S conference. Banner says "making and doing transformations". One kid is reading, the other looks aside.instruction-tuned large language models
- exploit human interactional infrastructure
- rely on our own practical methods for sense-making

the bulk of interpretive work falls to the user
- sequences are driven by the user’s prompts and pursuits
- next-token-predictions overwhelmingly treated as answers-to-questions
- incongruities resolved by imputing knowledge & intent
- corrections, when made, never stick

¹ instruction-tuning, the engineering feat that makes these LLMs appear so happy and docile, at once obscures these processes & amplifies their effect (Dingemanse & Enfield 2024)
² these findings are in line with, but distinct from, Bender & Koller’s (2020) points on semanticsPortrait of Garfinkel with screenshot from some paragraphs of his Studies in Ethnomethodology. Principles he found include: Answers are perceived as answers-to-questions. Incongruous answers are resolved by importing knowledge and intent

Was trying to see if #easst4s2024 had some advice on reporting COVID.

But the only thing I was able to find was this: «In short: there are no strict regulations and it is not necessary to test. You should of course not feel shy either to wear a mask when you have symptoms[…]»

Which reads a whole lot like “if you wanted to, you could show up with symptoms and all and not even mask up” 🫠🫠

Hey #easst4s2024 @easst crowd. I fear yesterday was unexpectedly my last day at the conference, due to testing positive for COVID this morning.

If you’re feeling not 100%, you might also want to get a couple of tests, which luckily are quite cheaply available in pharmacies in the Netherlands.

What a beautiful #EASST4S2024 party! Having all invited to the fun definitely solves the entanglement problem that your peers only book the dinner when you don't abd vice versa.
What a funky program, wonderful food selection, music, drinks. Networking and celebrating your work has never been better. And it feels even better with being open end!
My extended compliments to the organizers of more than a buzzily tuned conference. Cheers!

Protip for @easst organisers and #easst4s2024 folks: with a conference that happens only once every four years and that has a low-traffic acronym like #EASST4S, there is no need to have year-specific hashtags. Predictable confusion & fractured convos could be prevented by keeping to a single, clear, maximally short hashtag like #easst4s — variants like #easst4s24 and #easst4s2024 just add extra ballast

I know it's day 4 so maybe this comes in handy in 2028 🤣
