Reading Powell’s chapter on #Romans for #EfM during #PrideMonth is disappointing. On the second page, he perpetuates the idea that Paul specifically spoke against homosexuality (Romans 1:24-27) when it is questionable as to whether Paul thought of homosexuality as a condition or a disposition or indeed was referring to it at all in this passage (the argument could be made that he was referring to pederasty or even just the ancient equivalent of “hooking up”).

I’ve wrestled with Paul (and Romans) for years. This letter has been used by so many people as a cudgel to hurt & even destroy those children of God who are not made like them for generations. It is hard for me to get past the hate-full rhetoric & deeds they have inspired. I recognize the significance of this letter to the development of #Christian doctrine & #theology but honestly, I think we would be better off paying more heed to #Acts than Romans & #Jesus more than Paul.

The #June #book we’re #Reading for the Reconciliation Book Group (#RBG) is America’s Original Sin by Jim Wallis (interestingly we read his False White Gospel in April).

I’m still in the Introduction of this book, so I don’t yet have much of an opinion on it. I can say that, so far, it’s been an uncomfortable read. I’ve also done a significant amount of highlighting. Part of me is also amused that I am reading it concurrently with Julian of Norwich (short text) and 2 chapters constituting an overview of Paul’s letters (Powell’s Introducing the Nee Testament) This week’s focus for #EfM #YearTwo is writing a spiritual (auto)biography for Paul. The confluence of all these texts is kind of fascinating.

“God will lead us through times of anxiety.” Is the point of Rev. Everett Lees reflection on Isaiah 6:1b-7 which is today’s verse in #TheDisciplesWay It’s a point I totally believe in yet also one I struggle to live out. Trusting God is an absolutely essential part of my faith & being. At the same time, and perhaps because this week’s reading for #EfM is the gospel of #Matthew I am aware that I fall woefully short of actually doing it. Although I am not a rich man, I struggle with sharing the material things that I have, particularly with strangers, & despite being positive that God will provide for me. I think the disconnect occurs because I think I need more than I actually do & the only way to be sure I will have what I need when I need it is to personally possess it before I need it. I’m not just talking about things, either. I struggle to share my faith as well. Faith, however, is not food. It is not consumed by being shared. In fact, it grows. If we let it.

I scored 2 #Thinkpad #X260 laptops at #EFM #electronicsfleamarket in March with a handful of batteries for really cheap.
a i7 2.6Ghz and an i5 2.4Ghz

The i7 is immaculate, and is running great.
The i5 has some issues. Opening it up it was missing the SSD and SODIMM RAM, and I noted some corrosion on the aluminum frame around the SSD slot.

Getting it to moot up, there is this really weird spotting and "worms" with the #LCD that is really distracting. Not sure how this happened - and would love any insights as to the what & why this happened.
I suspect just easier to swap out the 12.5" 1366x768 for something with better resolution?

I did order two 32 GB DDR4 2666 SODIMMs from #aliexpress - the unofficial max #RAM for these X260's - and they work great. Both the i7 & the i5 detect the SODIMMs in the BIOS and in Win11. I initially had some spare 16GB SODIMMs in them, but why not max out the RAM when most apps and browsers are memory hogs lately?

Routines are useful things, although I’ve never thought of my daily reading of #ForwardDaybyDay as “marinating ourselves daily in the stories of our Savior’s life & ministry” as #TheDisciplesWay puts it today. Honestly, I’m not sure I think of it, or saying the hours, as #BibleStudy either. Bible study is what I do on Tuesdays at #EfM The rest is just…IDK what I think it is but it’s not Bible study. This week in #Lent is about #learning & the suggested approach is the #LectioDivina it’s interesting that, as I read the descriptions of the movements, I already do 2 — meditation & contemplation. I try to pray (oratio) though I don’t think I have a great #PrayerLife And Lectio, or reading aloud, you can forget. IDK if I don’t want people knowing that I am reading the Bible or if I just dislike the sound of my own voice. Either way, I don’t do it & perhaps I should. Maybe it’s time I change my perspective on Bible study. Maybe it’s time to change my #routine.

My daily spiritual practices ebb & flow inconsistently. Lately, they’ve ebbed more than flowed as I’ve been caught up the the “news” and anger at the actions of 🍊 & SpaceBaby. In #Lent I am trying to stop that & and turn away from the anger. In addition to the #ForwardDaybyDay I have taken praying the hours back up using #DailyPrayerforAllSeasons & I am reading #TheDisciplesWay with my sisters. My hope is that diving into the deep end of my faith pool (I’m also doing #EfM & a course on #PauliMurray while reading #NadiabolzWeber ) will help me discern the path God has set me on. I’m not sure what that path is. I certainly don’t know where it leads. What I do know is that I need to be receptive to it. It would be nice if I could recognize it when I see it too. That, however, requires clearer sight & far less anger than I have right now. So I’m diving into study, not as a solution, but as a means of changing my focus & growing my awareness of God in my life & the world.

It’s a good thing I don’t lean towards apocalypticism or this week’s #Focus for Year 2 of #EfM would totally send me over the edge (probably good that I’m not a flat-earther, either). My description of the cultural context in which the New Testament was written is: a ruler appointed by conquerors & a few institutions preserving native rule overseeing gross income inequalities with strong expectations of benefaction & obligation where “honor” is a pivotal social value & “shame” is to be avoided at all costs. Only the long-standing tradition of prophets railing against injustice & the vagaries/malfeasance of the powerful offer any hope at all. The problem is: that description sounds very much like our current cultural context but without the tradition of prophets. Those we don’t recognize, let alone listen to, anymore. If we did, I’d be hard-pressed to think we weren’t on the brink of the last days. Instead, I find myself praying we can still correct the path we’re on #beforeitstoolate
