During January and February of 2025, we'll offer a course on one of the most remarkable stories of the Christian church in America: how enslaved African Americans learned about and embraced Christianity, in the process changing the way other Americans experienced and understood the faith. The course,
"Christianity and American Slavery," will present stories that may surprise you, while answering your questions about how an enslaved people survived 250 years of bondage and how their descendants survived and combatted a century of Jim Crow.
You may be surprised to learn that during the first century of slavery in the southern United States, most southern slaveowners and clergymen avoided sharing the Christian faith with enslaved people, out of fear that the gospel message would undermine the slave system. This fear proved prophetic. In the 1730s, British missionaries began traveling through the South, preaching to large crowds and igniting the "Great Awakening," and their message inspired the enslaved to resist their situation. Ellen Tucker will lead this course, using visual resources developed
