This year, I had the honor of being the first reader for the MTS thesis of Rev. Nicholas Koimur, an eminent Eden Theological Seminary soon-to-be-alumnus! His thesis was on the #theology and #history of the #Kalenjin initiation rite and its Christian version and provided a constructive #ecclesiology on a way forward. He also won the Eden Honor Graduate Fellowship Award!

I wrote this six years ago. Much of what I feared then has already come to pass, and it's getting worse day by day.

Richard Bernard, English Puritan, writes on two paths to poverty, both from Proverbs. One is a hand that is slack at work, the other is one slack at giving 2 the poor. It has to be feared that if you are incompassionate to the poor, your wealth will rot.

Today, isn’t it more like have to be fearful if you’ve mentioned anyone’s incompassionate dealings with others?

God still work this way? Natural law? How can you give what is meet?

"Certainly, it is to be feared, that thou hast been unmerciful, and incompassionate to the poor, and therefore such a canker and curse doth adhere unto thy wealth, that like a man in a consumption it cannot prosper or thrive, but rather pines and vanishes away by little and little into nothing. He that withhol-deth more than is meet, or dealeth with a slack hand shall soone become poor, Prov. 11. 24. & 10.4."

Thomas Valpy French, an Anglican missionary to India, insists all must be equally welcome & respected within a house of worship. No differences by race, station, or even between individuals in “a House of Prayer for all people.”

Incisive words in a caste system. But is there a caste system in your church? Dress codes for respect (read: fashion) that rule some out? Fees for events?

How can you make someone else more welcome in church?

On this Christmas Day, here’s a heart-warming story of a Scrooge repenting of sins, from the diary of a Christian Frederick Schwartz, a missionary to India.

What would the world and church look like if our gospel proclamation came alongside this witness? Can the gospel really ever be independent of such witness and fruit?
