A jar of home-made jam.

Breaking the habit of pop social media to try the Fediverse kinda broke the social media habit in general. It feels good, but there's still our new music to be shared. Here's a wacky and eclectic progressive gabber metal tune from an upcoming Red Ankh album:

I ran a music blog called The Ten Thousand Things from 2005 to 2011. Most days I would post a downloadable mp3 with some pithy info & links to get more official stuff about the music. Holy cow, was it eclectic.

Much of it is still browsable at the Internet Archive.

Screenshot from the music Blog "The Ten Thousand Things" from March 2005 showcasing Les Paul. Text reads in part:

With his 1937 creation of the solid-body electric guitar Les Paul, The Wizard of Waukesha, opened the door leading away from Django Reinhardt and towards Jimi Hendrix and Robert Fripp. But in 1947 he created this, the first true multitrack recording, which ultimately begat Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Lee Perry, and The Bomb Squad. Much of what we consider music from 1950 forward would have been impossible without this technology.

Although stunts involving re-recording a musician playing alongside a recording of themselves had been tried earlier by Sidney Bechet and others, Les Paul was the first to record parallel tracks on a single piece of tape in order to have control at a later time of the "mix" of these elements. He also did it all in his home studio, and released these bizarre experiments to great commercial success.Screenshot from the music Blog "The Ten Thousand Things" from March 2006 showcasing My Life In The Bush of Ghosts. Text reads in part:

BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE: QU'RAN March 31, 2006 On April 11th Nonesuch are releasing a special 25th anniversary edition of My Life In The Bush of Ghosts, the record which changed the course of music by combining found vocals with “world” music influenced musical collages, giving rise to a new genre of sampled music and influencing everyone from Public Enemy to... Moby? The new version contains all of the original tracks remastered, plus seven previously unavailable outtake tracks. Well, almost all of the original tracks... the track featured here, Qu'ran, has not been included on most versions of the record since shortly after it's initial release. A partial explanation for this comes from the enoweb site: The lIslamic Council of Great Britain had approached the record company with a complaint about the use of the “found” material [a ritual chanting of the Holy Koran. Actually, I'm surprised that anyone got permission to even tape it in the first place]; There are some expressions of Islam in which *all* music is considered “haram” [| think that's the Arabic term, anyway] - or against the teachings of the Koran. There is an argument about whether or not Mohammed (pbuh) stated that “music” for use in certain Islamic festivals or special occasions *is* allowable, but that's for folks who know the Surahs better than I.The banner from the music blog "The Ten Thousand Things" featuring a Maneki Neko, Les Paul Guitar, Caution Sign Dancing Man, a kid at a second line in New Orleans, and more...Screenshot from the music Blog "The Ten Thousand Things" from March 2005 showcasing Carl Orff. Text reads in part:

CARL ORFF: MUSICA POETICA March 7, 2005 Although | had heard quite enough of his Carmina Burana by the time | was thirteen years-old, some of Carl Orff's less flogged-to-death stuff is very ear-worthy. This piece was used to great effect in Terrence Malick's 1973 film Badlands, giving the outlaws-on-the-run flick a mythic quality it might otherwise have lacked. A soundtrack for the film has never been Tue eimsr oiciral mecorpine in released and recordings of this piece were very rare until this RO G "eobHARION CD was released in 1995 commemorating the centennial of PEREORMER S Witd WAB “WOKES b pirth s This is a fragment of a larger work, Schulwerk (literally “school work”), that was written as part of a children’s musical education project that Orff devised. The music is simple because it was meant to be performed by children just learning to play their instruments. This same piece was also, uh, “heavily referenced” (ripped off) by Hans ZImmer for his 1993 score to True Romance. You can get the CD here. 0 COMMENTS

Fragile ambient beauty, inventive electronica, good old psychedelic folk, electroacoustic delights, dream pop & deep soul; all from lesser known independent artists. The new radio show for the excellent Music For Dreams station is here.

Like any good social media lemming, I did that #InstaFest thing from #Spotify. I would definitely enjoy this, but it is missing some of the usual variety I try to put in my Playlist. Not a bad start though. #EclecticMusic #WhoElseWantsToGo
