A selection of Crockett’s works are available for free download from @gutenberg_org – including THE BLACK DOUGLAS (1899), which gave Tolkien ideas from battles with wargs to secret coats of chainmail, & THE GREY MAN (1896), with its nightmarish account of the legendary cannibal Sawny Bean…

Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
My heart remembers how!

Robert Louis Stevenson
To S. R. Crockett
(In Reply to a Dedication)

Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
My heart remembers how!

Gray recumbent tombs of the dead in desert places,
Standing stones on the vacant wine-red moor,
Hills of sheep, and the howes of the silent vanished races,
And winds, austere and pure:

Be it granted me to behold you again in dying,
Hills of home! and to hear again the call;
Hear about the graves of the martyrs the peewees crying,
And hear no more at all.

Samuel Rutherford (S.R.) Crockett (1859–1914) was born #OTD, 24 Sep. A bestselling author in his lifetime of 60+ novels, he fell from fashion after WW1, and his books were dismissed as “kailyard”. But Tolkien cites Crockett as an inspiration, & in VIDA, or THE IRON LORD (1907) he possibly wrote the first car chase in fiction…

For those who don't know me well, I am a woman but prefer men's attire, particularly of the antique (usually edwardian perhaps through 1950's, but that's pushing it) variety. I also love dandyism. After years of searching, I think I finally found a lounge suit! It doesn't say so in the description, but when I fed the words into Perplexity and asked what sort of suit it was, it told me lounge. I am totally blind, so I cannot see the images. This is the sort of thing that would be worn daily to almost every informal occasion, from business meetings, to shopping, to luncheon with friends, to a walk around the park, to seeing a doctor or getting a haircut. It's the winter version, made with wool, though some are in lighter fabrics, such as linen, for the summer. This is a modern reproduction but sounds like it has no synthetic materials, unlike many that I keep seeing with ridiculous things such as polyester, zippers, etc. It can be worn with buttoned boots, but also with Oxfords or other lace-up shoes.

This, in contrast, is truly formal dayware, suitable for a wedding or some other serious occasion. As you can tell, this one is authentic. No, I won't be buying it, as I don't need such a suit right now. Oddly enough, it is very easy to find morning suits, tuxedos, etc. but not lounge suits..

ebay.com/itm/397023472497

Earlier this week, I began thinking. I had heard of running suits, but is there such a thing as a walking suit? It turns out that there is. These are quite informal and are normally used in the country or when out for city strolls, but not for everyday occasions like the lounge suits. Regardless, I can't find one anywhere. It was difficult enough finding this!

#ScribesAndMakers 17 If you have creative parents, do you read what they write/appreciate their art or craft, or keep out of it altogether?

My father took family photographs and started writing and illustrating his travel log. It was boring with long descriptions of what he ate.

My mother sewed and vaguely dreamed of being a writer. She made some of our clothes growing up and in retirement, started making period doll clothes.

Left gift she made for me: Tilly an Edwardian Female impersonator.

Came across another Ivory Soap ad. I swear there's so many of these and they're all wonderfully weird in their own way. How long do you think it took to came up with something to do about how it floats?

#Ephemera #VintageAds #Edwardian

Old illustrated ad from the Edwardian era, for Ivory brand soap. Three young women are swimming, one in the water and two sitting on a pier, all wearing shoulder and knees covering wool bathing suits in a sort of nautical style. The two are looking at the first, who is brandishing something. Ad text reads:
Use Ivory Soap – It floats!
"One morning, last summer, at a Michigan resort, a party of girls went down to the lake in their bathing suits for the purpose of washing their hair. Each carried the necessary articles, including a cake of soap. One had a cake of (brand omitted in ad with an empty line, allowing you to fill it in yourself); another a cake of (once again empty) soap. Several other varieties were represented.
The place selected was near the pier, and the implements for washing the hair were placed in the interstices of the logs supporting the pier. During the process of washing, the (empty line) soap girl lost her soap and in the effort to recover it, the (second empty line) soap girl lost her’s, too. The girl with the Ivory Soap thereupon threw it far out into the lake, swam after it and, holding it aloft cried: “Use Ivory Soap – it floats!”
In the end, all three girls used Ivory Soap – they had to."
(This has been marked to be an extract from a letter.)

Again we ask: Even if Ivory Soap were no better than other soaps, does not the fact that it floats make it better?

Finished blousewaist! Took the photos yesterday so apparently they're a bit blurry! Anyway. Turned out nice, the fabric is a lovely linen mix twill and so soft. The sleeves are full length for a change so I hope it will be nice and warm in the winter and reasonable in Spring and Autumn!

#Sewing #HistoryBounding #Edwardian

A detail view of the underarm and sleeve of a cream white Edwardian style bodice, shirt or waist. There's pretty lace running across the side and front, and the plain but very gathered at the top sleeve has its one sleeve in the front scoop of the arm's eye, not aligned with the side seam. This is either the Edwardian way of doing it, or a misunderstanding on Sini's part but something she really likes in practice. It's mostly hidden by the fall of the arm when worn, but gives better mobility.Top down view of the entire waist. It has a rounded standing collar with topstitching along the edges, tall cuffs with the same, and an equally tall waistband onto which the rest of the bodice is gathered. It has plenty of lace on it in general, but the cut and style is also distinctly of the pigeon breast mode, with full sleeve heads and loose sleeves. There's ten tiny shell buttons down the front, in pairs, for decoration and utility. The fabric looks heavy, soft and dense. It's laid out on a drying rack for clothes, flat, but as if it's on a jaunty ghost. There's some quilt and an air purifier just in the background.Very close up of the sleeve cuffs, with two tiny buttons sewn on with thick white linen thread. It is not the neatest cuff ever made, but looking lovely and sturdy. The buttons have small defects as they're natural materials, but they're very shiny and not plastic! There's one single black cat hair just on one, hanging out. The topstitching is a bit wobbly, as the fabric is buttery soft and the sleeve vent and cuff edge has about a million layers to sew through, as is usual.

The Fediverse is normally not the place to do this, but why not? I will begin with what I want in a #partner and/or a #friend and then explain a bit about myself. I am also considering this a second #introduction.

In a partner, I am seeking a #man over sixty who is well-educated, well-dressed (suit/tie), confident, and witty. I have no interest in bdsm, daddy-daughter things, rough play, etc. I simply adore the voices, bodies, experiences, and company of #seniors . I would prefer you to either live in or near #NewJersey or to be able to visit me frequently if you don't. No married men (or those in relationships), one-night stands, parents/caregivers, workaholics, or recreational drug users. I am open to both fun with no strings attached and a committed #relationship , but I must get to know you first. For #friends , I am a lot more lenient. You can be either a man or a #woman , should be over twenty-one, and should share at least some of my interests. You don't have to be #single or live in or near New Jersey, though if you do, we could become offline friends and go places together. No drugs or drama. Please note that I have no understanding of depression, anxiety, mental illness, low self-esteem, etc.

Georgiana Brummell is not my legal name, but it is what I use. I chose it in honour of #BeauBrummell . I live in New Jersey and am forty-one years old. Some of my interests include studying #dandyism , nineteenth-century #English #grammar , #UpperReceivedPronunciation , the #Italian language, #BritishHistory , the #Regency, and #MS-DOS and its current varients. I like #coffee , #tea , #wine , #cooking , #ClassicLiterature , #nature, historical #documentaries , old BBC radio shows , #gardening , #cats , hot weather , relaxing in the pool, and playing #cards and #dice . I love #opera and #operetta , particularly singers from the 1940's and earlier. In #ClassicalMusic , I like Baroque through early Romantic. I prefer antique #menswear (usually #Edwardian ) and accessories. I love #wit , #wordplay , and dry #humour without vulgarity, though I do enjoy #adult fun. I am happily #childfree and am an #atheist . I also have no interest in politics or world affairs. I have been totally #blind since I was two months old, due to Retinopathy of Prematurity.

You can find more about me, including other ways to contact me, at this link.

People asked what the occasion was. And we just wanted to promenade in the beautiful weather in Old Drøbak in the clothes we had made (the ladies anyway, I had bought my suit this time) - it was like being in a painting by PS Krøyer.
My feet was still sore from the long hike, so luckily the promenade was short.
